1938 Sugar Bowl
The 1938 Sugar Bowl was the fourth edition of the Sugar Bowl and featured the LSU Tigers and the Santa Clara Broncos in a rematch of the previous year's game. It was played on Saturday, January 1, 1938, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Background LSU was invited to the Sugar Bowl for the third consecutive season, and was a slight favorite. The Broncos were undefeated on the season and as such were invited to the Sugar Bowl once again. Bernie Moore
Bernie Hawthorne Moore (April 30, 1895 – November 6, 1967) was an American college football, basketball, track and field coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Mercer University (1926–1928) and Louisiana State University (LSU) (1935–1947). Moore was also the head basketball coach at Mercer (1926–1928) and the head track and field coach at LSU (1930–1947). He was then SEC commissioner from 1948 to 1966. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1952. Early life Moore was the youngest of 14 children, the son of a Baptist minister. He graduated from Carson–Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he played football and baseball. 1950 Orange Bowl was the sixteenth edition of the bowl game, played at Burdine Stadium in Miami, Florida, on Monday, January 2, 1950. The 1949 Santa Clara Broncos football team was an American football team that represented Santa Clara University as an independent during the 1949 college football season. In their fourth season under head coach Len Casanova, the Broncos compiled an 8–2–1 record, were ranked No. 15 in the final AP Poll, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 222 to 114. The Broncos' victories included a 14–0 besting of UCLA, a 19–6 victory over Saint Mary's, and a 21–13 victory over Bear Bryant's Kentucky Wildcats in the 1950 Orange Bowl. Miami Orange Bowl
The Miami Orange Bowl was an outdoor athletic stadium in Miami, Florida from 1937 until 2008. The stadium was located in the Little Havana neighborhood west of Downtown Miami. The Miami Orange Bowl was considered a landmark and served as the home stadium for the Miami Hurricanes college football team from 1937 through 2007 and for the Miami Dolphins for the Dolphins' first 21 seasons until Joe Robbie Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium) opened in nearby Miami Gardens in 1987. 1944 Orange Bowl
The 1944 Orange Bowl was a postseason college football bowl game between the LSU Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies. It was the 10th edition of the Orange Bowl. The teams had met in the regular season, with Texas A&M winning at LSU 28–13. LSU however defeated Texas A&M 19–14 in the bowl rematch. One human poll comprised the 1937 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football rankings. Unlike most sports, college football's governing body, the NCAA, does not bestow a national championship, instead that title is bestowed by one or more different polling agencies. There are two main weekly polls that begin in the preseason—the AP Poll and the Coaches' Poll.
