1935 Stanley Cup Final
The 1935 Stanley Cup Finals was contested by the Montreal Maroons and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maroons won the series 3–0 to win their second and final Stanley Cup. The 1934–35 Montreal Maroons season was the 11th season of the NHL franchise. The team finished second in the Canadian Division. In the playoffs, the Maroons defeated Chicago Black Hawks, the New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the franchise's second Stanley Cup championship. Offseason Tommy Gorman, after winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Black Hawks, was hired to coach the Maroons, replacing Eddie Gerard. Red Horner
George Reginald "Red" Horner (May 28, 1909 – April 27, 2005) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League from 1928 to 1940. He was the Leafs captain from 1938 until his retirement. He helped the Leafs win their third Stanley Cup in 1932. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1965. Born in Lynden, Ontario, Horner spent all of his time playing in Toronto, Ontario. As a junior player, he played for the Toronto Marlboros of the Ontario Hockey League. In his NHL career, he had the role of enforcer and retired with 42 goals, 110 assists and 1,264 penalty minutes in 490 regular season games. His election to the Hockey Hall of Fame has been considered rather controversial, as until his final two seasons was not considered the best defenseman on his own team, let alone in the NHL. Earl Robinson (ice Hockey)
Henry Earle Robinson (March 11, 1907 — September 8, 1986) was a Canadian professional ice hockey right winger who played eleven seasons in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Maroons, Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens between 1928 and 1940. He won the Stanley Cup with the Maroons in 1935. Playing career Born in Montreal, Quebec, Robinson played nine seasons for his hometown Montreal Maroons. He had his best season offensively for the Maroons in 1934–35 scoring a career high 17 goals and 35 points in 47 games. He would play for the Maroons beginning in 1928–29 up until the team ceased operating at the conclusion of the 1937-38 NHL season. Alex Connell
Alexander "The Ottawa Fireman" Connell (February 8, 1902 — May 10, 1958) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played for the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Falcons, New York Americans and Montreal Maroons teams in the National Hockey League. He is widely believed to be one of the greatest hockey goaltenders of all time. Amateur career While in the military in the First World War and stationed in Kingston, Ontario, Connell was recruited to play for the junior league Kingston Frontenacs in 1917. Purportedly then unable to skate, he consequently played two seasons as the backup goaltender for the team. Other than hockey, Connell starred in several sports. Canadian Division (NHL)
The NHL's Canadian Division was formed after expansion in 1926. The division existed for 12 seasons until 1938. Despite its name, the division contained at least one team based in the United States throughout its existence. During its run as a separate division, when considered as a whole the Canadian Division was the slightly less successful of the league's two divisions, winning five Stanley Cup championships compared with seven won by the American Division. Under the cross-over playoff format then in use, Canadian Division teams contested just one intra-divisional Finals, compared to three such series played by American Division teams.
