1935 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 1935 Prince Edward Island general election was held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island on 23 July 1935. The Liberal Party led by Walter Lea swept the board by winning every seat in every constituency. This was the first time that a government in the British Commonwealth would face no opposition in an elected chamber. To date, this feat has only been accomplished one other time in Canadian history, the 1987 New Brunswick election. Background The 1935 election took place in the shadow of the Great Depression. In 1931, the Conservative Party, then under James David Stewart, defeated the incumbent Liberal government, installing Stewart as Premier. As Premier, Stewart worked to get federal assistance in combating the Depression, but stress caused him to die in office in 1933. James David Stewart
James David Stewart (January 15, 1874 – October 10, 1933) was a Prince Edward Island educator, lawyer and politician, the province's 15th premier. Born in Lower Montague and educated at Prince of Wales College and Dalhousie University, he taught school in Georgetown for several years before entering the legal profession. In 1917, the Conservative Party recruited Stewart, then a young lawyer, to be the party's candidate in a by-election in King's County. Stewart won the vote and took his seat in the provincial legislative assembly. In 1921 he was elected leader of the Conservative Party and led the party to victory in the 1923 election but his government was defeated in the 1927 election due to Stewart's opposition to total prohibition of alcohol. Stephen Hessian
Stephen Stanley Hessian (October 2, 1891 – November 5, 1962) was a lawyer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 5th Kings from 1920 to 1923 and 3rd Kings from 1935 to 1939 and from 1955 to 1962 in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, Liberal. He was born in Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of Thomas G. Harry Cox (politician)
Harry Howard Cox (June 1874 – 1950) was a farmer, merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1928 to 1950 as a Liberal. He was the son of Julian Cox and Jane Ellen Jeffs. Cox was married three times: to Margaret Florence MacLaine in 1905, then to Lottie A. MacLaine and finally to Katherine M. Pratt. He worked for his uncle Robert Cox before opening his own business in Morell. Cox also owned a lobster factory and operated a farm near Morell. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1923.
