Devere Allen
Devere Allen (1891–1955) was an American socialist and pacifist political activist and journalist. Allen is best remembered as the main editor of ''The World Tomorrow'' following the departure of Norman Thomas from the magazine in 1922. Allen was the author of more than 20 books and pamphlets and was active in the leadership of a number of political organizations, including the League for Independent Political Action (1928–1932) and the Socialist Party of America. Biography Early years Devere Allen was born June 24, 1891 in Providence, Rhode Island. ''The World Tomorrow: A Journal Looking Toward a Christian World'' (1918–1934) was an American political magazine, founded by the American office of the pacifist organization Fellowship of Reconciliation ( FORUSA). It was published under the organization's The Fellowship Press, Inc., located at 108 Lexington Avenue in New York City. Prior to June 1918, the periodical was titled ''The New World''. It was a leading voice of Christian socialism in the United States, with an "independent, militant" editorial line. 1934 United States Senate Elections
The 1934 United States Senate elections were held in the middle of Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term. During the Great Depression, voters strongly backed Roosevelt's New Deal and his allies in the Senate, with Democrats picking up a net of nine seats, giving them a supermajority (which required 64 seats, two-thirds of the total 96 seats in 1934). This marked the first time that an incumbent president's party did not lose seats in both houses in a midterm election, followed by 1998 and 2002. This was also the first time in American history that the opposition party failed to flip any Senate seats, something that only occurred once since, in 2022.
