1934 Hawaii Rainbows Football Team
The 1934 Hawaii Rainbows football team was an American football team that represented the University of Hawaii as an independent during the 1934 college football season. In its 14th season under head coach Otto Klum, the team compiled a perfect 6–0 record, shut out four of six opponents, and outscored opponents by a total of 142 to 21. The team's victories included games against Denver (36–14) and California (14–0). Tom Kaulukukui starred in the backfield for the 1934 team. His jersey number 32 was retired by the Hawaii football program.2018 Media Guide, p. 98. Otto Klum
Otto "Proc" Klum (October 17, 1892 – September 24, 1944) was an American football and basketball coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Hawaii from 1921 to 1939. Klum is the most successful coach in Hawaii football history having compiled a career record of 84–51–7. His 1925 team went 10–0. Klum was also the head basketball coach at Hawaii for two seasons from 1921 to 1923, tallying a mark of 13–8. Klum was notorious for running up the score. In the 1926 season, his team scored more than 100 points twice. His teams also scored more than 80 points in two other games in 1923 and 1925. Klum died on September 24, 1944, of a heart attack near Ashland, Oregon. He was born in Talent, Oregon Talent is a city in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. Honolulu Stadium
Honolulu Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium located in the Moiliili district of Honolulu, Hawai'i, at the corner of King and Isenberg Streets. Opened in 1926, it was the primary sports venue in Hawaii preceding Aloha Stadium. During its final years, the stadium could hold about 25,000 fans; it was demolished in 1976. A public park, Old Stadium Park, now occupies the location. A plaque at the corner of King and Isenberg commemorates the stadium. Some of the property wall that stood behind the stands on the west end still remains. American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. 1934 College Football Season
The 1934 college football season was the 66th season of college football in the United States. Two New Year's Day bowl games were initiated to rival the Rose Bowl Game. On February 15, Warren V. Miller and Joseph M. Cousins organized the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association and by October, the group had enough funds to sponsor the Sugar Bowl. Meanwhile, W. Keith Phillips and the Greater Miami Athletic Club worked in November at a January 1 game for Florida, and the Orange Bowl was created. Once again, University of Illinois Professor Frank Dickinson's math system selected a Big Ten team as national champion, the undefeated Minnesota Golden Gophers. William Boand and Professor Edward Earl Litkenhous also selected Minnesota at the end of the season. Thomas Kaauwai Kaulukukui (January 22, 1913 – March 9, 2007) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head coach at the University of Hawaii in 1941, as co-head coach with Eugene Gill, and from 1946 to 1950. From 1956–1959 he served as head coach of ʻIolani preparatory school in Honolulu. Kaulukukui was a standout college athlete who earned 17 letters in five sports and was the University of Hawaii's first All-American football player. Poi Bowl
The Poi Bowl was a college football bowl game played during the late 1930s in Honolulu, Hawaii, at Honolulu Stadium. The game featured the then- Hawaii Rainbows and, usually, an invited team from the Pacific Coast Conference. History The game was contested in early January from 1936 to 1939. The bowl was named after poi, a traditional taro-based staple food in Polynesia, on suggestion from Vernon "Red" McQueen, sports editor of ''The Honolulu Advertiser''. In December 1938, the contest was renamed as the Pineapple Bowl at the request of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The university invited teams from the Pacific Coast Conference to participate in the Poi Bowl every year except for 1937, when they played a local all-star team.
