Madenburg
The ruin of Madenburg Castle is one of the biggest and oldest castle complexes in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The castle was built on a cliff on the outskirts of the Palatinate Forest looking towards the Rhine rift valley. The ruin, which is surrounded by forest, lies at an elevation of 458 metres overlooking Eschbach, Südliche Weinstraße, Eschbach. Despite its strong defences, the castle was destroyed during the War of the Grand Alliance by the troops of Joseph de Montclar. The castle was never rebuilt. Ferenc Csik
Ferenc Csik (12 December 1913 – 29 March 1945) was a Hungarian swimmer who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. In the 1936, Olympics he won a gold medal in the 100 m freestyle event and a bronze medal in the 4×200 m freestyle relay event. Paul Schwarz (19 November 1867, in Neisse – 28 December 1938, in Torgau) was a German orientalist, Iranist and Arabist. In 1893 he received his doctorate at the University of Leipzig with a dissertation titled ''Umar Ibn Abî Rebî'a. Ein arabischer Dichter der Umajjadenzeit''. Erwin Sietas
Erwin Sietas (24 July 1910 – 20 July 1989) was a German swimmer who specialized in the 200 m breaststroke. He competed at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics and finished in fourth, fourth and second place, respectively. Sietas was known for his fast start; in 1932 and 1936 he led he race, but faded at the finish. He won three medals at the European championships, including a gold in 1934. Between 1928 and 1936 Sietas won all national titles, and in 1935 set a world record in the 200 m breaststroke. He was the only European breaststroke swimmer to win an Olympic medal between 1928 and 1952. In 1992 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Ernst Küppers
Ernst Küppers (July 9, 1904 – July 24, 1976) was a German backstroke swimmer who competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics and in the 1932 Summer Olympics. He was born in Viersen and died in Nordhorn. He was the husband of Reni Erkens and the father of Ernst-Joachim Küppers. In 1928, he finished fifth in the Swimming at the 1928 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke competition. Four years later he again finished fifth in the Swimming at the 1932 Summer Olympics - Men's 100 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke event at the 1932 Games. John Besford
John Charles Preston Besford, OBE (30 January 1911 – 26 February 1993) was an English competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics and European championships, and England in the British Empire games, during the 1930s. Besford competed primarily in the backstroke. He was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire, England. and died in Spain. Besford was European 100-metre backstroke champion in 1934. He won the bronze medal for England at the 1930 British Empire Games and silver at the 1934 British Empire Games in London, both in the 100-yard backstroke event. In 1934 he was also a member of the English team which won the bronze medal in the medley relay contest. Norman Wainwright (4 July 1914 – 2 May 2000) was an English freestyle and backstroke swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the 1932 Summer Olympics, in the 1936 Summer Olympics, and in the 1948 Summer Olympics. He was born in Stoke-on-Trent. In 1932 he was eliminated in the first round of the 400 metre freestyle event. Four years later he was a member of the British team which finished sixth with the British team in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay competition at the 1936 Games.
