The 1930 Pyu earthquake occurred on . The epicenter was located north to Bago, Burma, then part of British India. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated at 7.3, or 7.3. Earthquake Before the earthquake, a tremor occurred at 16:36 UTC, and was felt in Yangon. The earthquake struck at 18:51 UTC, causing severe damage to Pyu, located about north of Bago. Many masonry structures in Pyu were destroyed. Damage The area between Nyaunglebin and Toungoo was hardest hit, with 36 deaths reported. Many buildings were destroyed and the local railway was also damaged, with many freight cars and one locomotive derailed and turned over. The intensity of the quake reached Rossi-Forel VIII–IX, corresponding to MM VII–IX, and was felt in Bangkok, Thailand, about away. Bago (formerly spelt Pegu; , ), formerly known as Hanthawaddy, is a city and the capital of the Bago Region in Myanmar. It is located north-east of Yangon. The Indian Plate (or India Plate) is a minor tectonic plate straddling the equator in the Eastern Hemisphere. Myanmar is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Oblique subduction, block rotation, and a transform margin has been responsible for the seismic activities of the country. The Sagaing Fault is one of the largest sources of earthquakes in the country, having produced deadly quakes in the past centuries.
