The 1930 Belmont Stakes was the 62nd running of the Belmont Stakes. It was the 24th Belmont Stakes held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York and was held on June 7, 1930. Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is an American Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds run at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. It is run over 1.5 miles (2,400 m). Colts and geldings carry a weight of ; fillies carry . The race, nicknamed The Test of the Champion, The Test of Champions and The Run for the Carnations, is the traditional third and final leg of the Triple Crown. It is usually held on the first or second Saturday in June, five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes. Maximilian Justice "Max" Hirsch (July 12, 1880 - April 3, 1969) was an American National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse horse trainer, trainer. Born in Fredericksburg, Texas, and raised Roman Catholic, Hirsch became one of the most successful trainers in Thoroughbred horse race, Thoroughbred horse racing history. He spent part of his formative years working as a groom and jockey at Morris Ranch, Texas, Morris Ranch in Gillespie County, Texas. Hirsch conditioned horses for various owners including George W. Louis Schaefer
Louis J. Schaefer (December 27, 1907 - August 8, 1988) was an American jockey and trainer in Thoroughbred horse racing best known for winning the Preakness Stakes, second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series, both as a jockey and as a trainer. Schaefer rode Dr. Freedland to victory in the 1929 Preakness Stakes. He continued to ride into 1936 when he was hired by William L. Brann to take over as train for his racing stable in 1937. Louis Schaefer trained Challedon to win the 1939 Preakness and went on to earn American Horse of the Year honors for that year. A resident of Uniondale, New York, in his latter years Louis Schaefer owned a bar and grill across the street from the old Jamaica Race Course. James Butler (grocer)
James Butler (1855 – February 20, 1934) was an American businessman from New York and prominent owner of racehorses and racetracks. With his cousin, Mother Marie Joseph Butler, he founded Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York in memory of his late wife. Life Early years Butler was born in 1855 in County Kilkenny, Ireland, on farming property held by his family for hundreds of years. After education in a Russellam village parish school, he emigrated to Boston, with his parents, when he was 20 years old, and began farming, in Goshen Mountain, Massachusetts. He returned to New York in under two years, joining a brother who had emigrated before him, Butler then started working for hotels in Chicago and New York City, at which he learned food service operations. Andrew Schuttinger (July 13, 1892 – March 5, 1971) was an American jockey, trainer and owner in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. Questionnaire (1927–1950) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse bred and raced by James Butler, president and owner of Empire City Race Track, who owned his sire Sting and grandsire Spur. Questionnaire was race conditioned by Andy Schuttinger, who was his trainer through 1930, after which Edward J. Bennett took over. Questionnaire had an outstanding year at age three. Although he did not run in the first two legs of the 1930 U.S. Triple Crown series, he finished third to Triple Crown champion Gallant Fox in the Belmont Stakes. Raymond Workman
Raymond "Sonny" Workman (May 24, 1909 – August 21, 1966) was an American National Champion and Hall of Fame jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. During his fifteen years as a professional rider from 1926 through 1940, he won an exceptional twenty percent of his starts. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Raymond Workman's mother was a native of Washington, D.C. and after her husband's death she and the children returned to live there. Workman studied to be a member of the clergy before deciding to embark upon a career as a jockey.
