1929 South American Championship
The twelfth edition of the South American Championship was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 1 to 17 November 1929. The 1928 edition was postponed due to the participation of Chile, Uruguay and Argentina in the 1928 Summer Olympics held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where Uruguay and Argentina won gold and silver respectively. The participating countries were Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay, while Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile withdrew from the tournament. Argentina won its fourth continental title. Aurelio González (footballer)
Aurelio Ramón González Benítez (25 September 1905 in Luque, Paraguay – 9 July 1997) was a Paraguayan football player. González is one of the greatest football players of Paraguay, considered by many as the second best player behind Arsenio Erico. He started his career in Sportivo Luqueño and then moved to Olimpia of Asunción where he spent the rest of his career winning several championships, most notably the three consecutive national championships obtained by Olimpia in 1927, 1928 and 1929. In the early 1930s he rejected an offer worth millions from San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina in order to fight for his country, Paraguay, in the Chaco War. He also was a vital player of the Paraguayan national team scoring several goals in the 1920s and 1930s, and participated at the 1930 World Cup. Roberto Cherro
Roberto Eugenio Cerro, named "Cherro" (23 February 1907 – 11 October 1965) was an Argentine football striker. He was born in Barracas in the city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He played the majority of his career with Boca Juniors, he scored 221 goals in 305 games for the club (in all official competitions), making him Boca Juniors' highest scoring player until his record was surpassed by Martín Palermo in 2010. He also ranks 5th. among the all-time Primera División top scorers, with 236 goals in 345 league matches. Cherro won five league titles with Boca Juniors, being also the club's top scorer on five occasions (1926, 1928, and 1930 with 20, 32 and 37 goals respectively). Manuel Ferreira (footballer)
Manuel Ferreira (22 October 1905 – 29 July 1983) was an Argentine footballer who was a member of the Argentina national team. Ferreira was part of the Argentine squad that won the football silver medal at the 1928 Olympic tournament. He also captained the Argentine team at the 1930 FIFA World Cup finals, in which Argentina finished as runner-up. Ferreira won the Copa América championship with Argentina in 1929 and also won the Copa Newton in 1927 and 1928. Mario Evaristo
Marino "Mario" Evaristo (10 December 1908 – 30 April 1993) was an Argentine footballer who played for the Argentina national football team. He was a member of the runner-up Argentine team in the 1930 FIFA World Cup and along with his elder brother Juan, a wing half-back, they became the first siblings to appear in a World Cup final. Evaristo was christened Marino, but later changed his name to Mario. He played for Sportivo Palermo, Club Atlético Independiente and Boca Juniors in Argentina, he was part of the Boca team that won the Primera Division Argentina 1931 (the first professional champions of Argentina). Later in his career he moved to Europe, where he played for Genoa C.F.C. in Italy, and for Nice and Antibes in France. Adolfo Bernabé Zumelzú (5 January 1902 – 29 March 1973) was a football player from Argentina. Career Zumelzú represented the Argentina at the South American Championship 1927 and the South American Championship 1929 both won by Argentina. Carlos Peucelle
Carlos Desiderio Peucelle (13 September 1908 – 1 April 1990) was an Argentine football player who played as an inside forward or as a right winger and is considered one of Argentina's finest wingers in their history. He is also known for being the catalyst for starting "La Maquina" with River Plate who went on to dominate football in South America in the 1940s. Playing career Peucelle played first team football for San Telmo and Sportivo Buenos Aires before joining Argentine giants River Plate for a fee of 10,000 pesos.
