1928 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. Roger Turner (figure Skater)
Roger Felix Turner (March 3, 1901 – October 29, 1993) was an American figure skater. He was born in Milton, Massachusetts and died in Walpole, Massachusetts. Turner was the seven time (1928–1934) U.S. National Champion and two time (1930–1931) World silver medalist. He is tied with Dick Button for having the most consecutive wins at the U.S. Championships (men's singles). Turner was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1994. Melitta Brunner
Melitta Kreckow Brunner (née Brunner, 28 January 1907 – 26 May 2003) was an Austrian figure skater. Competing in pairs with Ludwig Wrede, she became the 1928 Olympic bronze medalist and a three-time World medalist, winning two silvers and a bronze. As a single skater, she was the 1929 World bronze medalist. After retiring from competitions Brunner taught skating in Switzerland and Great Britain. In December 1932 she married Paul Kreckow, a German figure skater from Berlin. They married in London, where they were giving skating demonstrations. Constance Wilson-Samuel
Constance Wilson-Samuel (January 7, 1908 – April 6, 1963) was a Canadian figure skater, born in Toronto, Ontario. Competing in ladies' singles, she became the 1932 World bronze medallist, a four-time North American champion, and a nine-time Canadian national champion. She competed at three Olympics, placing sixth in 1928 and fourth in 1932. Wilson-Samuel also competed in pair skating. With her brother Montgomery Wilson, she was a three-time North American champion and a five-time Canadian national champion. They placed fifth at the 1932 Olympics. Fritzi Burger
Friederike "Fritzi" Burger (6 June 1910 – 16 February 1999) was an Austrian figure skater. She was a two-time Olympic silver medalist (1928, 1932), a four-time World medalist (silver in 1929 and 1932, bronze in 1928 and 1931), the 1930 European champion, and a four-time Austrian national champion (1928–1931). Life and career Burger was born on 6 June 1910 in Vienna. Her family was Jewish. She won the first-ever contested European Championships, held in 1930. Sonja Henie, who held a monopoly in women's figure skating at the time, was not present at this championship and Burger never defeated her in competition. She placed second behind Henie at the 1928 and 1932 Winter Olympics, and in the 1929 and 1932 World Championships. Maribel Vinson
Maribel Yerxa Vinson-Owen (née Vinson; October 12, 1911 – February 15, 1961) was an American figure skater and coach. She competed in the disciplines of ladies' singles and pair skating. As a single skater, she was the 1932 Olympic bronze medalist, a two-time World medalist (1928 silver, 1930 bronze), the 1937 North American champion, and a nine-time U.S. national champion. As a pair skater, she was the 1935 North American champion and four-time national champion with George Hill. She also won two national titles with Thornton Coolidge. She was the first female sportswriter at The New York Times, and continued competing and winning medals while working as a full-time reporter. Nathaniel Niles (figure Skater)
Nathaniel William "Nat" Niles (July 5, 1886 – July 11, 1932) was an American tennis player and figure skater who competed in single skating, pair skating, and ice dancing between 1914 and 1932. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and died in Brookline, Massachusetts. Niles won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in men's single skating three times and nine national pair skating titles with his partner Theresa Weld Blanchard. Blanchard and Niles also won a five national titles in ice dancing. Nathaniel W. Niles also excelled at tennis, and was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame in 2000. While a student at Harvard, he was an NCAA champion for the sport. He competed in 23 successive U.S. National Championships. With Edith Rotch, he won the 1908 mixed doubles title, and in 1917, he reached the singles final, losing to Robert Lindley Murray in four sets.
