Buckeye Athletic Association
The Buckeye Athletic Association, also known as the Buckeye Conference, was an athletic league formed out of members of the Ohio Athletic Conference. Its original membership in 1926 included Ohio Wesleyan University (Battling Bishops), Ohio University (Bobcats), Miami University (known then as the Big Reds, later the Redskins and currently the RedHawks), the University of Cincinnati (Bearcats), Denison University (Baptists, and later Big Red) and Wittenberg University (Lutherans, and later as Tigers). The Battling Bishops of OWU won the first title in football in 1926. The league was asked to end the membership in both the OAC and the Buckeye in 1928, at which time all the schools voted to instead leave their membership in the OAC behind and be only members of the Buckeye. Don Peden
Don C. Peden (December 30, 1898 – February 23, 1970) was an American football and baseball player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Ohio University from 1924 to 1946, compiling a record of 121 wins, 46 losses and 11 draws Peden's winning percentage of (.711) is the highest of any coach in the history of the Ohio Bobcats football program. His teams won six Buckeye Athletic Association championships, in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1935, 1936, and 1938. Peden was also the head baseball coach at Ohio from 1924 to 1948, tallying a mark of 250–134 and served as the university's Athletic Director from 1938 to 1949. The Bobcats' football stadium was renamed in his honor as Peden Stadium following his retirement. Peden died at the age of 71 on February 23, 1970, in San Diego, San Diego, California. The 1928 football season has both the USC Trojans and the Georgia Tech Golden Tornado claim national championships. USC was recognized as champions under the Dickinson System, but the Rose Bowl was contested between the No. 2 and No. 3 Dickinson-rated teams, California and Georgia Tech. The game was decided by a safety scored after Roy "Wrong Way" Riegels ran 65 yards in the wrong direction. Vance Maree blocked the ensuing punt which gave Georgia Tech a safety deciding the 8–7 win. The Florida Gators led the nation in scoring as a team, led by its "Phantom Four" backfield, with 336 points. They were remembered by many sports commentators as the best Florida football team until at least the 1960s.
