1928 Newfoundland General Election
The 1928 Newfoundland general election was held on 2 June 1928 to elect members of the 27th General Assembly of Newfoundland in the Dominion of Newfoundland. The Liberal Party led by Richard Squires defeated the Conservative Party led by Frederick C. Alderdice and formed the government with the support of Fishermen's Protective Union members. Legislation had been introduced so that persons named to the Executive Council were no longer required to run for reelection. Helena E. Squires, elected in a 1930 by-election, became the first woman elected to the Newfoundland assembly. In April 1925, women over the age of 25 had been granted the right to vote; in the 1928 general election, 90 per cent of women eligible to vote cast a ballot. 26th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 26th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in June 1924. The general assembly sat from 1924 to 1928. The Liberal-Conservative Progressive Party led by Walter Stanley Monroe formed the government. Monroe resigned as prime minister in August 1928 and was succeeded by Frederick C. Alderdice. Cyril Fox served as speaker. Sir William Allardyce served as governor of Newfoundland. John Parsons (Newfoundland Politician)
John Parsons (1868 – March 18, 1949) was a businessman, ship's captain and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Bay Roberts in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1928 to 1932 as a Liberal. He was born in Bay Roberts Bay Roberts ( 2016 Population 6,012; Census Agglomeration 11,083) is located on the north shore of Conception Bay on the northeastern Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Arthur Barnes (politician)
Arthur Barnes (November 17, 1866 – November 24, 1956), Ph.D. was an educator and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Harbour Grace from 1904 to 1908 and from 1919 to 1924 and Burgeo from 1928 to 1932 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a Liberal. He was born in Topsail, Conception Bay, the son of John Barnes and was educated in St. John's. Barnes taught school at Coley's Point, Bay Roberts and St. John's. He was vice-principal of Bishop Feild College and was principal for a school in Bay Roberts. His fiancée Emmeline Dawe died of tuberculosis before they could be married and Barnes took on the care of Dawe's mother, a widow. He served nine years as principal for the normal school in St. John's from 1908 to 1917. He became the first Minister of Education for Newfoundland. Burgeo-LaPoile
Burgeo-La Poile is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 7,527 eligible voters living within the district. The district was first created when Newfoundland joined confederation in 1949 as Burgeo and La Poile, and existed until 1975. It was recreated in 1995 following a reduction in the number of seats in the House of Assembly from 52 to 48, forming from the amalgamation of the former districts of La Poile and Burgeo-Bay D'Espoir. The district takes in the southwestern corner of Newfoundland, stretching from the town of Burgeo in the east to Cape Ray in the west. Its largest community, Port aux Basques, is the island's link to continental North America through the Marine Atlantic ferry service. The population in the region dropped by about 15 per cent between 1996 and 2001. Herman William Quinton
Herman William Quinton (28 October 1896, in Red Cliff, Newfoundland – 2 April 1952) was a Canadian politician. The son of Jacob Quinton and Sarah Benger, he was educated at Bishop Feild College, then worked as a school teacher from 1913 to 1914 and, afterwards, joined Sir William Coaker in the Fisherman's Union Trading Company managing various branches before becoming dry goods superintendent. Quinton served with the Newfoundland Regiment during World War I and saw action in France and Belgium, he achieved the rank of lieutenant in 1918. He became secretary-treasurer of the Great War Veterans' Association of Newfoundland in 1924. Following the war, he went back to the Trading Company before joining A.E. Hickman & Co. as a travelling salesman. From 1928 to 1932, Quinton was manager for an export division of the Monroe Export Co. He married Ella Blackmore. William Coaker
Sir William Ford Coaker (October 19, 1871 – October 26, 1938) was a Newfoundland union leader and politician and founder of the Fisherman's Protective Union, the Fishermen's Union Trading Co., and the town of Port Union. A polarizing figure in Newfoundland politics and society, he was described as "the outstanding social reformer produced by Britain's Oldest Colony" by eventual Premier Joey Smallwood. Coaker is known for criticizing the truck system which dominated the fishery of Newfoundland in the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries.
