1928 Bethnal Green Borough Election
Elections to Bethnal Green Council were held on 1 November 1928. All the council seats were up for election. The term of office for each Councillor being three years. Background Following the decision of the Labour Party to expel Communist Party members from their party, in Bethnal Green, a number of their council group were expelled, including leading figure Cllr. Joseph James Vaughan. The Communist Party responded by fielding a full slate of candidates in opposition to Labour Party candidates. Bethnal Green Liberals decided to end their nominal Progressive alliance with the Municipal Reform Party and stand candidates for the first time under the Liberal Party label. Summary In the previous elections in 1925, the Labour Party had won 17 of the 30 council seats, giving it a majority of Councillors. Metropolitan Borough Of Bethnal Green
Bethnal Green was a civil parish and a metropolitan borough in the East End of London, England. It was formed as a civil parish in 1743 from the Bethnal Green hamlet in Stepney ancient parish, and the church of St Matthew, Bethnal Green, was dedicated in 1746. The vestry became an electing authority to the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1855 and in 1889 it became part of the County of London. In the 1900 reform of local government caused by the London Government Act 1899 the parish became a metropolitan borough which bordered Hackney, Poplar, Stepney and Shoreditch. In 1965 it was abolished and merged into the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Origins Until 1743 Bethnal Green formed a hamlet within the large parish of Stepney. Joe Vaughan (politician)
Joseph James Vaughan (1878 – 1938) was a British politician. Early life and career Born in East London, Vaughan began working at the age of eight, but remained at school part-time until he was thirteen. He worked a wide variety of jobs before he was apprenticed to a former Chartist. This encouraged him to become a radical and join the Liberal Party. However, he soon grew disillusioned with the party, and instead joined the British Socialist Party (BSP).Graham Stevenson,Vaughan Joseph, ''Compendium of Communist Biography'' Vaughan eventually settled into a career as an electrician, joined the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and became president of Bethnal Green Trades Council. Garnham Edmonds JP (20 April 1865 – 9 April 1946) was a British butcher and Liberal politician who was both an MP and Mayor of Bethnal Green. Background Edmonds was described as tall, handsome, with a great shock of hair.Forty Years in and out of Parliament by Percy Harris. He had a daughter, Kate E. Rawles, who was awarded the MBE. Professional career Edmonds was a butcher in Bethnal Green, East London, trading as Edmonds and Mears tripe dressers. His butchers shop was located in Bethnal Green Road and sold tripe and offal. After his election to parliament he continued to serve behind the counter and would travel each morning at 6.30am to Smithfield Market to make purchases. He was also a religious and social worker.
