Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, almost always on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The competition is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of at Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings carry and fillies . It is dubbed "The Run for the Roses", stemming from the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is also known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" or "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" because of its approximate duration. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes, and then the Belmont Stakes. Alfred John "Whitey" Abel (March 16, 1903 – February 11, 1969) was a jockey, trainer, owner as well as a breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses who rode Bostonian to victory in the 1927 Preakness Stakes, run that year as the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series. Eddie Ambrose
Edward Elbert Ambrose (April 13, 1894 – June 8, 1994) was an American jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. In the 1910s and 1920s he rode for top owners such as Harry Payne Whitney, Willis Sharpe Kilmer, and Walter M. Jeffords. During his career Ambrose had four mounts in the Kentucky Derby and seven in the Preakness Stakes with his best result in both aboard Toro when he finished third in the 1928 Derby and second in the 1928 Preakness for owner Edward B. McLean, publisher of ''The Washington Post''. Among his best mounts was Wildair with whom he won the 1920 Metropolitan Handicap and ran third in the 1920 Preakness and Prudery, considered in retrospect as the American Champion Two and Three-Year-Old, Filly. In a famous 1920 edition of the Dwyer Stakes involving just two entrants, Ambrose rode John P. Grier to a strong second-place finish against Man o' War. Ambrose lived to be 100. Albert Johnson (jockey)
Albert M. Johnson (November 18, 1900 - September 18, 1966) was an American Hall of Fame jockey and trainer. Born in the rural community of Milan, Washington, Albert Johnson began his career in 1917 at Playfair Race Track in nearby Spokane. Owner/trainer Stuart Polk recognized Johnson's potential and signed him to a contract. A year later, Polk sold Johnson's contract for a reported $15,000 to California horseman John H. Rosseter. The astute Polk would then sign another future Hall of Famer, Laverne Fator and in 1920 his brother Mark Fator who would become the 1922 American National Champion jockey by wins. Albert Johnson's success at local racetracks led to a move to tracks in the New York City area where he was the principal jockey for Morvich in his undefeated two-year-old season in 1921 and with whom he won the 1922 Kentucky Derby. Maximilian Justice "Max" Hirsch (July 12, 1880 - April 3, 1969) was an American National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse horse trainer, trainer. Born in Fredericksburg, Texas, and raised Roman Catholic, Hirsch became one of the most successful trainers in Thoroughbred horse race, Thoroughbred horse racing history. He spent part of his formative years working as a groom and jockey at Morris Ranch, Texas, Morris Ranch in Gillespie County, Texas. Hirsch conditioned horses for various owners including George W. Mack Garner
Andrew Mack Garner (December 23, 1898 – October 28, 1936) was an American jockey who won the 1934 Kentucky Derby as well as the 1929 and 1933 Belmont Stakes. He was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1969. Mack Garner made his professional racing debut on July 16, 1914, at a Butte, Montana racetrack. Personal life Always known by Mack, Garner was born in Centerville, Iowa on December 23, 1898, to Theodore Garner and Sarah Clements Garner. He learned how to ride horses from his father. When he was 15 years old, Garner wanted to ride race horses because the Garners were all jockeys at one time, including his father and uncle. Louis Schaefer
Louis J. Schaefer (December 27, 1907 - August 8, 1988) was an American jockey and trainer in Thoroughbred horse racing best known for winning the Preakness Stakes, second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series, both as a jockey and as a trainer. Schaefer rode Dr. Freedland to victory in the 1929 Preakness Stakes. He continued to ride into 1936 when he was hired by William L. Brann to take over as train for his racing stable in 1937. Louis Schaefer trained Challedon to win the 1939 Preakness and went on to earn American Horse of the Year honors for that year. A resident of Uniondale, New York, in his latter years Louis Schaefer owned a bar and grill across the street from the old Jamaica Race Course.
