1926 VFA Season
The 1926 Victorian Football Association season was the 48th season of the Australian rules football competition. The premiership was won by the Coburg Football Club, after it defeated Brighton by 16 points in the final on 18 September. It was the club's first VFA premiership, achieved in only its second season of senior competition. For the second time in six seasons, the Association was disrupted by the mid-season withdrawal of one of its clubs: Brunswick withdrawing after sixteen rounds in protest at suspensions given to two of its players. Association membership After having been reduced from ten clubs to eight in 1925, the Association sought to admit two clubs into its senior ranks to return to ten. Coburg Football Club
The Coburg Football Club, nicknamed the Coburg Lions, is an Australian rules football club based in Coburg, a northern suburb of Melbourne, and currently playing in the Victorian Football League (VFL). It is based at Coburg City Oval since 1915, which was partly redeveloped in 2020. Coburg has historically been a proud club and has won 6 VFA/VFL premierships with the most recent premiership in 1989. From 2001 to 2013 the club was aligned with the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), acting as its reserves team. Second Amended Argus System
The Argus finals systems were a set of related systems of end-of-season championship playoff tournament used commonly in Australian rules football competitions in the early part of the 20th century. The systems generally comprised a simple four-team tournament, followed by the right of the top ranked team from the home-and-away season to challenge for the premiership. The systems were named after the Melbourne newspaper '' The Argus'', which developed and supported their use. First Argus system In 1901, the Victorian Football League first adopted the "Argus system", after issues had emerged with the fairness of the system which had been introduced in 1898. City Of Brunswick
The City of Brunswick was a local government area in the inner-northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It comprised the suburbs of Brunswick, Brunswick East and West Brunswick. It ceased to exist on 22 June 1994, when its council was disbanded by the Kennett Government and replaced with appointed commissioners, who oversaw its amalgamation with the City of Coburg and parts of the City of Broadmeadows, to create the City of Moreland. History The area that was to become the City of Brunswick was first surveyed in 1839, a large tract of mostly flat land bounded on the east and west by the Merri Merri and the Moonee Ponds Creeks respectively. Wally Raleigh
Timothy Walter 'Wally' Raleigh (1 July 1895 – 16 October 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Brunswick in the Victorian Football Association. Raleigh only managed to play six times during his three seasons at Collingwood and after the war crossed to Carlton. In contrast to his stint with Collingwood, Raleigh barely missed a game for Carlton and played in five finals. Recorder Cup
The J. J. Liston Trophy is awarded annually to the best and fairest senior player in the Victorian Football League (formerly the Victorian Football Association). It is named after J.J. Liston, a businessman, civic leader and sports administrator who was fundamental in advancing sport in Australia, particularly Australian Rules Football and Soccer. History The first award for the Association best and fairest player was the Woodham Cup, named after committeeman Alf Woodham, which was first awarded in 1923. The Woodham Cup was renamed the Recorder Cup, named after the Association's official match-day publication, in 1926. Starting from 1933, a second award, the V.F.A. Gordon Rattray
Gordon Kitchener Rattray (19 October 1898 – 10 December 1964) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the first VFL player to use the torpedo punt. Family The son of Bruce Rattray (1860–1932) and Laura Rattray, née Barratt, Gordon Kitchener Rattray was born at Shepparton on 19 October 1898. He married Janet Elizabeth Wharton on 29 June 1922. They were divorced in 1938. He married Sylvia Catherine Burnet (1904–1980) in 1939. Education He was educated at Wesley College. Military service He enlisted in the First AIF on 21 April 1917. He was only 18 years and 6 months of age (i.e., under 21), but his parents gave formal permission to his enlisting and serving overseas. Les Boyd (Australian Rules Footballer)
William Leslie "Les" Boyd (1 March 1895 – 16 November 1964) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally from Windsor, Boyd started at St Kilda in 1915 and kicked 16 goals that year up forward, including three on debut. He finished second in St Kilda's goal-kicking. In 1916 and 1917, Boyd did not make any appearances, as his club was in recess due to World War I. When he returned in 1918 he kicked 17 goals, to top St Kilda's goal-kicking. He spent one more season at St Kilda before moving to the Melbourne Football Club. He transferred to Victorian Football Association side Brighton in 1922, where he played until 1927, when he accepted an offer to coach Port Fairy. Joseph Plant
Hugh Joseph Plant (12 October 1907 – 30 August 1993) was an Australian first-class cricketer who represented Victoria in the Sheffield Shield during the 1930s. Plant was educated at Xavier College who was initially an Australian rules footballer and played a senior match for Victorian Football League club Richmond in the 1925 VFL season. Richmond lost the fixture, which took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, to Melbourne by 39 points. He couldn't break into Richmond's team again and instead continued his football career at Coburg, where he played as a centre half back in their 1928 premiership side. Plant completed his football career in the 1929 season and in 1930 moved to the Fitzroy Baseball Club to begin a distinguished career as a baseballer. Harry Kerley
Henry Charles "Harry" Kerley (12 December 1894 – 23 January 1987) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The fourth son of John Kerley (1855-1939), and Sarah Ann Kerley (née Hillier, 1860-1941), Henry Charles Kerley was born on 12 December 1894. He married Rose Gertrude Robinson (1900-1987) in 1922. Motordrome (Melbourne)
The Motordrome, also known as the Olympic Park Speedway, the Melbourne Speedway or the Victorian Speedway, was a former speedway and Australian rules football ground located approximately on the site of the present day Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Olympic Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The ground was primarily a speedway track, but also hosted football matches. History Melbourne Carnivals Pty. Ltd, a company established in 1923 by Jack Campbell and Jim DuFrocq, developed and leased a large site known as the Amateur Sports Ground from the Crown with the help of local entrepreneur John Wren. Williamstown Football Club
The Williamstown Football Club, nicknamed The Seagulls, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne. The club currently competes in the men's and women's Victorian Football League and VFLW competitions. History The Williamstown Football Club was formed in 1864, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Australia.
