1925–26 Cardiff City F.C. Season
The 1925–26 season was the 25th year of competitive football played by Cardiff City F.C. and the team's fifth consecutive season in the First Division of the Football League. Having finished as runners-up in both the First Division and the FA Cup in the previous two seasons, the team's early optimism was misplaced as they finished in 16th position. In the FA Cup, Cardiff progressed past Burnley in the third round but were eliminated by Newcastle United in the next round. The team were also knocked out of the Welsh Cup early on, losing to Merthyr Town. Willie Davies and Billy Hardy made the most appearances for the club during the season, both playing 39 times. Hughie Ferguson, who was signed for a club record £5,000 in November 1925, was the side's top goalscorer. He scored 21 times during the season, more than double the second highest player. Cardiff (; cy, Caerdydd ) is the capital and largest city of Wales. Willie Davies (footballer)
William Davies (10 March 1900 – 1953) was a Welsh professional footballer who made over 300 appearances in the Football League during spells with Swansea Town, Cardiff City, Notts County and Tottenham Hotspur. He also made 17 appearances for Wales, scoring six times. Early life Davies was born in Troedyrhiw to Thomas and Mary Davies, growing up in Harriet Town. Career Davies began his career playing for local amateur sides, joining Rhymney where he once scored 61 goals in a single season. He was signed by Swansea Town in 1921, playing in every forward position for the club before settling at outside-right. He made his Wales debut while playing for Swansea but, in 1924 with the club going through financial trouble, he moved to Cardiff City for a fee of £25. John Jennings (footballer)
John Jennings (27 August 1902 – 14 April 1997) was an English professional footballer who played as a right half. Career Born in Platt Bridge, Jennings had worked as a railway fireman before beginning his footballing career with Wigan Borough.Hayes, p. 99 He joined First Division side Cardiff City in 1925, making his debut in a 3–2 defeat to Birmingham City on 10 October 1925. However, due to competition from several established players including Billy Hardy and Harry Wake, he made just one further appearance during the 1925–26 season in a 0–0 draw with Arsenal on 31 February 1926. The following season, Jennings did not make an appearance until the final three months of the season, being handed a chance at full back following an injury to Tom Watson, but impressed enough to eventually displace Watson from the side. Jimmy Nelson (footballer)
James Nelson (7 January 1901 – 8 October 1965) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a full-back. He moved to Ireland as a child where he began his senior career with Irish Intermediate League side Crusaders. He spent two seasons with the team before joining Football League First Division side Cardiff City in 1921. After two seasons as a reserve, he became established in the first team and went on to make more than 250 appearances in all competitions. He helped the club reach two FA Cup finals, losing the first in 1925 before Cardiff became the first team from outside England to win the competition in 1927. He also won the 1927 FA Charity Shield and the Welsh Cup on four occasions with Cardiff. Following Cardiff's relegation, Nelson was sold to Newcastle United in 1930.
