1923 Uruguayan Primera División Of FUF
The 1923 Primera División championship was the first tournament organized by the Uruguayan Football Federation (FUF), a dissident association founded by clubs Central Español and Peñarol that had recently disaffiliated from the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF). The tournament was held simultaneously with the AUF, in the episode known as the "schism of Uruguayan football". Overview The tournament consisted of a round-robin tournament. It involved 32 teams, all newly enrolled to this new federation, and many of them had close relationship with the CA Penarol baptized teams with names such as "Peñarol del Plata", "Roland Moor" or "Roberto Chery" which directly referenced that club. The Uruguayan Football Federation ( es, Federación Uruguaya de Football or ) was a federation of football clubs founded in Uruguay in 1923 which existed alongside the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) during the amateur era of Uruguayan football. The club was formed from the merger of two clubs: Miramar (founded on October 17, 1915) and Misiones (founded on March 26, 1906), in June 1980. As part of the merger, the new strip for the new club was a mixture of those of the previous two clubs. The home strip (white and black) is the old Miramar strip, and the away strip was the one used by Misiones. What made this merger notable was that Miramar and Misiones were local derby rivals, having both originated in the same neighbourhood of Montevideo. Previous to the creation of this club, Miramar also merged with legendary club Albion in 1976, forming 'Albion Miramar'. However, this entity lasted for only 2 seasons. Institución Atlética Sud América, usually known as Sud América or just IASA, is a football club from Montevideo. They currently play in the Uruguayan Segunda Division. History Sud América has won the Uruguayan 2nd Division on 7 occasions, this is a national record they share with Fénix. It was a hard-to-beat team back in the days and it was very economically stable. After the relegation to 2nd Division in 1996, Sud América competed consecutively without success for 16 seasons, becoming the most popular team of the division. This year was the first fractured Uruguayan football championship, due to the schism that triggered the emergence of a parallel Uruguayan Football Federation organizing their own championship.
