Helen Wills
Helen Newington Wills (October 6, 1905 – January 1, 1998), also known by her married names Helen Wills Moody and Helen Wills Roark, was an American tennis player. She won 31 Grand Slam tournament titles (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles) during her career, including 19 singles titles. Wills was the first American woman athlete to become a global celebrity, making friends with royalty and film stars despite her preference for staying out of the limelight. She was admired for her graceful physique and for her fluid motion. She was part of a new tennis fashion, playing in knee-length pleated skirts rather than the longer ones of her predecessors, and was known for wearing her hallmark white visor. Phyllis Covell
Phyllis Lindrea Covell ( Howkins. 22 May 1895 – 28 October 1982) was a female tennis player from Great Britain. She is best remembered for her silver medal at the Paris Olympics of 1924 in the women's doubles event partnering with Kitty McKane. In 1923 she won the women's doubles title at the U.S. National Championships with McKane defeating the American pairing of Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman and Eleanor Goss in three sets. She was also a runner-up in the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon in 1921, partnering Max Woosnam. In 1924 she was part of the British Wightman Cup team who defeated the United States 6–1 at Wimbledon. Some major changes have taken place in history and have affected the number of titles that have been won by various players. These have included the opening of the French national championships to international players in 1925, the elimination of the challenge round in 1922, and the admission of professional players in 1968 (the start of the Open Era). Since then, 58 women have won at least one grand slam. Molla Mallory
Anna Margrethe "Molla" Bjurstedt Mallory (née Bjurstedt; 6 March 1884 – 22 November 1959) was a Norwegian tennis player, naturalized American. She won a record eight singles titles at the U.S. National Championships. She was the first woman to represent Norway at the Olympics. Tennis career Although she had won a bronze medal in singles for Norway at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, and was the many-time champion of her homeland, Mallory was relatively unknown when she arrived in New York City to begin work as a masseuse in 1915. She entered the U.S. Indoor Championships that year unheralded and beat Marie Wagner 6–4, 6–4, which was the first of her five singles titles at that tournament. Helen Huntington Hooker or Helen Hooker O'Malley Roelefs (1 January 1905 – 2 April 1993) was an American sculptor and portrait painter who spent a considerable part of her career in Ireland. Early life Helen Huntington Hooker was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States on 1 January 1905. She was the third of four daughters of chemical engineer and business man Elon Huntington Hooker, and Blanche (née) Ferry, the daughter of Dexter M. Ferry. The family were wealthy and had six governors of Connecticut and Massachusetts among their fore bearers.
