1923 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1923 season of the Auckland Rugby League was its 15th. The First Grade competition featured 7 teams with the Fire Brigade club who featured in it in 1922 not entering a team. First grade winners City Rovers won their 6th championship title and the 3rd in succession after defeating Athletic 8–7 in the final. With a round to play City was only 2 competition points ahead of Athletic so it was decided to play a final to decide the champions. The match was played on Carlaw Park in front of an enormous crowd of 11,500 with £325 received in gate takings. City were the second team to win three consecutive titles after Ponsonby United had won the competition in 1917, 1918, and 1919. It was to be 61 years until it happened again with Mt Albert winning the title from 1984–86 before Northcote won 4 titles from 1991–94, Glenora 3 titles from 1997–99, and Pt Chevalier won 3 titles from 2013–15. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Maritime Football Club
Maritime was a rugby league club in Auckland. They competed from 1918 to 1930 under the name Maritime for 4 seasons, Athletic for 4 seasons, Grafton Athletic for 3 seasons and Kingsland Athletic (following a merger with Kingsland Rovers) for 2 seasons, before the club was 'forced' to join with Marist Saints, Marist Old Boys in 1931. Club History Formation and first season On 10 April 1918 the “Maritime Club” applied to the Auckland Rugby League for affiliation to the league. They were nominating a senior team and their application was granted. They also nominated T. Sullivan as their delegate which was also approved while their registration of club colours was “held over for one week” due to another club applying to use the same colours. Their club colours eventually settled on red, white, and blue. Their first match was against Newton Rangers at Victoria Park, Auckland on April 27. Ernie Herring
Ernie Herring (28 January 1898 – 17 September 1947) was the 112th player to represent New Zealand at rugby league. Early life Ernest Herring was born on 28 January 1898. His parents were Sarah Alice Foster, and Albert Richard Herring. He was their sixth born child of ten. His older siblings were Albert Edgar Frank, Amy Alice Holoyde, George Reginald, Ethel Mabel, Arthur Edwin, Ernest Francis Holroyd, and Francis Holroyd, while his younger siblings were Ada Millicent, and Ann Holroyd. Playing career Ernie Herring began his career playing rugby union in Auckland. He was a representative of the Railway team which won the Auckland club competition and he also played for Auckland. Ben Davidson (rugby League)
Benjamin Alfred Davidson (1902–1961) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer who represented New Zealand. His brother Bill also represented New Zealand and another brother, George, played for Auckland and competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics as a sprinter. Playing career Alongside his brothers, Davidson played for the City Rovers in the Auckland Rugby League competition. Wally Somers
Walter Thomas "Wally" Somers was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Early life Walter Thomas Somers was born on June 14, 1899. He was the son of Amy Maria (Lawrence) and Daniel Somers. He had two sisters, Eileen Elizabeth Findlay (1896-1979) and Zelda Nina Goffin (1898-1966), and one brother Daniel Robert Lawrence Somers (1894-1944). Playing career Somers played for Newton Rangers in the Auckland Rugby League competition and appeared in a remarkable, for the era, 138 games for them from 1917 to 1929. Early in the 1929 season, he and Craddock Dufty were frustrated with the selection of the Newton team and Somers decided to retire. The following season both he and Dufty joined the Ellerslie United club where Somers played 11 matches scoring 3 tries and kicking a conversion and a penalty before retiring for the final time. Bill Stormont
William Stormont (25 August 1898 – 4 June 1925) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. His parents were John Stormont (1 Aug 1863 – 23 September 1936), a pastry chef and baker, and Annie Stormont nee Brownlie (7 July 1871 – 7 Dec 1944). Playing career Stormont played for Marist in the Auckland Rugby League competition. He represented Auckland and was first selected for the New Zealand national rugby league team in 1920 following Aucklands 24-16 win over the touring English team. Stormont was the first member of the Marist club to be selected for the Kiwis. He played in all 3 tests in the #10 prop position against the touring England team in 1920. Craddock Dufty
Calvin Thomas Craddock Dufty (10 March 1900 – 1 August 1955) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. Early life Dufty had sisters; Louisa Esther (1901-26), Annie Elizabeth (1902-62), Jessie May (1909-37), and Gwendoline Pearl (1919-90), a brother Cecil Charles who died in infancy (1905), and brothers Thomas Joseph (1899-1949), Samuel Craddock (1911-79), and Arthur (Artie) James (1911-89). Nelson Bass
Nelson Bass (1894–1963) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand in four test matches between 1919 and 1921. Playing career Bass played for the Newton Rangers club in the Auckland Rugby League competition for 4 seasons (1919–1922) before transferring to the Marist Old Boys in 1923. He again transferred at the conclusion of the 1923 season, this time to the City Rovers. Bass played in four test matches for New Zealand between 1919 and 1921, against Australia and Great Britain. Bass also represented Auckland, including in losses to Australia and New South Wales and a 24-16 win over Great Britain in 1920. Louie Ernest Brown (20 May 1905 – 3 June 1947) was a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He played at representative level for New Zealand, Other Nationalities and Auckland, as a or . Personal life Lou Brown was the son of Frank Brown and the nephew of the "Harrison brothers, well known in the early days of football in this ucklandprovince". Playing career Brown began his career playing rugby for Te Kowhai in the Waikato, and in 1921 he transferred to the Frankton rugby club. He was renowned for his pace which he had from an early age. Clarrie Polson
Clarence Percival "Clarrie" Polson was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand. He debuted for New Zealand in 1920 and became Kiwi number 143. Personal life Clarrie Polson was born Clarence Percival Polson on 27 July 1900. His parents were Catherine (Kate) Polson (1860-1938), and Ole (Oliver) Polson (1856-1915). Catherine had been born in Ireland. He was the youngest of 11 children. Frank Delgrosso
Frank Delgrosso (3 November 1899 - 29 July 1981) was a New Zealand rugby league player who represented New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand. Playing career Frank attended St. Columba's School in Ponsonby. Following school he began playing for the Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby player in the Auckland Rugby League competition, Delgrosso was first selected for the New Zealand national rugby league team, New Zealand side in 1921. He made his Test debut against Great Britain national rugby league team, Great Britain in 1924 and went on to play in nine Test matches. This included captaining New Zealand in the second and third Test matches in 1924. He also played for the Auckland Provincial team in 1924 and scored a try in a 13–28 loss.
