1922–23 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season
Huddersfield Town's 1922–23 campaign saw Town finish in their highest position since their inception 15 years earlier. In only their third season in top-flight football, they finished in 3rd place behind Liverpool and Sunderland. This was another good season following on from their FA Cup triumph the previous season. Squad at the start of the season Review Following the success at Stamford Bridge in the previous season's FA Cup Final, many were hoping that this newfound form would transfer itself into a successful league campaign and even a possible chance of the 1st Division title. However, Town had a bad start, only winning 2 of their first 10 games. So Herbert Chapman brought in Charlie Wilson from Tottenham Hotspur. Huddersfield Town F
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. Sam Wadsworth
Samuel John Wadsworth (13 September 1896 – 1 September 1961) was an English professional footballer who played as a left back for Darwen, Blackburn Rovers, Nelson, Huddersfield Town, Burnley and Lytham. He won 9 England caps between April 1922 and October 1926 and was captain for his final four appearances. He later had a long career in management in the Netherlands. David Steele (footballer)
David Morton Steele (29 June 1894 – 23 May 1964) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager. Playing career Born in Carluke, Scotland, Steele was a wing half who started his football career as a part-timer first with Armadale then St Mirren while he worked as a miner before the First World War. After the war he moved to Scottish junior club Douglas Water Thistle. In 1919, he joined then Southern League club Bristol Rovers playing for them during their first years in the league after they became members of the newly formed Division Three. Herbert Chapman signed Steele in a £2,500 deal to take him to Huddersfield Town in May 1922. Steele spent seven years at Huddersfield, winning a hat-trick of League Championships, two runners-up spot, an FA Cup runners-up medal in 1928, and three caps for Scotland. Howard Charles Slade (29 January 1891 – 7 April 1971) was a professional footballer, who played for Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town, Middlesbrough and Darlington. Frederick Roy Goodall (31 December 1902 – 19 January 1982) was a professional footballer, who played for Huddersfield Town for 16 years and played 25 games for England, 12 as captain. Goodall would have captained England in the first ever World Cup if they had decided to take a team to the tournament. He was widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world at that time. He was captain of Huddersfield Town throughout their most successful period, when they became the first team to win the English top flight three times in a row and dominated English football through the twenties. Harry Brough
Henry Burton Brough (27 December 1896 – 1975) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Huddersfield Town and Stoke. Career Brough was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and began his career with Huddersfield Town in 1913. His career at Huddersfield was hampered by World War I but once the league had resumed he helped the "Town" finish 2nd in 1919–20 gaining promotion to the First Division. Herbert Chapman came in as manager and Brough lost his place in the side being used as a backup player. In February 1923 he joined Stoke City after he had an unsuccessful trial with Manchester United. He was a regular in the Stoke side in 1923–24 and 1924–25 and scored once against Coventry City in September 1924. After making 85 appearances for Stoke he retired in October 1925. Ned Barkas
Edward Barkas (21 November 1901 – 24 April 1962) was an English professional footballer who played as a full back. He played in the Football League First Division for Huddersfield Town, Birmingham and Chelsea. Barkas was born in Wardley, County Durham. He won two league championship medals and a runners-up medal in the 1928 FA Cup Final with Huddersfield before becoming manager Leslie Knighton's first signing for Birmingham, where he made nearly 300 appearances and won another FA Cup runners-up medal, in 1931. On leaving Birmingham Barkas followed Knighton to Chelsea, returning to the Midlands on the outbreak of the Second World War.
