The 1922 United States Senate election in Montana took place on November 7, 1922. Incumbent United States Senator Henry L. Myers, who was first elected to the Senate in 1910, and was re-elected in 1916, declined to seek re-election. Former United States Attorney Burton K. Wheeler won the Democratic primary and advanced to the general election, where he faced Carl W. Riddick, the United States Congressman from Montana's 2nd congressional district and the Republican nominee. Ultimately, Wheeler defeated Riddick comfortably and won his first term in the Senate. With the Republicans divided between conservative and progressive factions, the Democrats gained six net seats from the Republicans while the Farmer–Labor party gained one. Charles Nelson Pray (April 6, 1868 – September 12, 1963) was a United States representative from Montana and a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Montana. Education and career Born on April 6, 1868, in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York, Pray attended the public schools of Salisbury and Middlebury, Vermont, and graduated from Middlebury Union High School. He attended Middlebury College and received a Bachelor of Laws in 1891 from the Chicago College of Law (now the Chicago-Kent College of Law). He was admitted to the bar in 1892 and entered private practice in Chicago, Illinois from 1893 to 1895. He continued private practice in Fort Benton, Montana from 1896 to 1906. He was an assistant prosecutor for the Twelfth Judicial District in Chouteau County, Montana from 1897 to 1898, and Prosecutor for the same district from 1899 to 1906, being elected to that post in 1898, 1900, 1902 and 1904. Montana is represented in the United States House of Representatives by one at-large congressional district, among the 435 in the United States Congress. The district was the most populous U.S. congressional district, with just over 1 million constituents. It was also the second-largest by land area, after Alaska's at-large congressional district, and the largest by land area in the contiguous United States. Currently, the district is represented by Republican Matt Rosendale. It had previously been represented by Republican Greg Gianforte, who did not seek re-election in 2020. Instead, he opted to run for Governor of Montana. Starting in the 2022 midterm elections, per the 2020 United States census, Montana regained the congressional seat it lost after the 1990 census. Tom Stout
Tom Stout (May 20, 1879 – December 26, 1965) was a U.S. Representative from Montana, who represented Montana's at-large congressional district from March 4, 1913, to March 3, 1917. Stout was born in New London, Missouri, in 1879, and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he studied and later taught law. In 1902, he moved to Lewistown, Montana, and entered publishing, working as the editor and publisher of the ''Fergus County Democrat'' from 1902 to 1916 and the ''Lewistown Democrat News'' from 1916 to 1946. He was elected to the Montana Senate in 1910, and served until 1913. Following the 1910 United States Census, Montana gained an additional seat in the United States House of Representatives. Rather than create separate districts, the existing Montana's at-large congressional district began separately electing two members, and Stout ran for Seat B in 1912.
