The 1921 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Carlton Football Club and Richmond Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 15 October 1921. Ernie Jamieson
Ernest Michael Jamieson (4 June 1888 – 8 September 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A key member of Carlton's defence in a successful era, Jamieson played in 14 finals with Carlton. He was used initially as a wingman following his recruitment from Williamstown, from which he played the 1910 Grand Final, but found a home at full-back when he performed well in that position late in the 1911 season. Jamieson, renowned for his skills when kicking in after a behind, was a VFL representative in 1913. A full-back in the 1914 and 1915 Carlton premiership teams, Jamieson was a hero in the former when he punched the ball away from South Melbourne forward Tom Bollard in the goal square, preventing a last second goal which would have levelled the scores. Francis Vane Hughes (26 February 1894 – 23 January 1978), nicknamed Checker, was an Australian rules footballer and coach in the Victorian Football League (now the Australian Football League). He coached the Melbourne Football Club to premiership success, and was responsible for the club changing its nickname to the Demons. John Hugh James MC & Bar (4 May 1890 – 23 April 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL between 1909 and 1916 and, upon returning from military service, from 1919 to 1923 for the Richmond Football Club. Daniel Thomas Minogue (4 September 1891 – 27 July 1961) was an Australian rules footballer, who played with three different clubs in the (then) Victorian Football League (VFL), and who was the coach of five different VFL clubs. Barney Herbert
Bernard Vincent Herbert (20 February 1889 – 14 December 1949) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the VFL between 1909 and 1921 for the Richmond Football Club. Norm Turnbull
Norman Turnbull (15 June 1894 – 19 July 1977) was an Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the VFL and horse trainer in both Melbourne and Sydney. After growing up in Richmond, Turnbull commenced his senior football career with St Kilda in 1914, making eight appearances in his first season. He was reported as having enlisted in late 1915 although there are no official service records under his name in the official archives. In 1918, Turnbull returned to senior football, playing the first eight rounds before being excluded from the team by the St Kilda committee “in the best interests of the team, owing to his play”. He was reinstated late in the 1920 season and played two more games for St Kilda before moving to Richmond for the 1921 VFL season.
