1921 Sopron Plebiscite
The Sopron area plebiscite took place on 14-16 December 1921. In the plebiscite, the residents of an area of 257 km2, comprising Sopron and eight surrounding settlements, voted on whether to remain in Hungary or to join Austria. After World War I, that was the only plebiscite concerning disputed borders on territory of the former Kingdom of Hungary that was permitted by the Entente. Participant settlements The following settlements participated in the plebiscite. Sopron (; german: Ödenburg, ; sl, Šopron) is a city in Hungary on the Austrian border, near Lake Neusiedl/Lake Fertő. History Ancient times-13th century When the area that is today Western Hungary was a province of the Roman Empire, a city called ''Scarbantia'' stood here. Its forum was located where the main square of Sopron can be found today. During the Migration Period, Scarbantia was believed to be deserted. When Hungarians arrived in the area, the city was in ruins. From the 9th to the 11th centuries, Hungarians strengthened the old Roman city walls and built a castle. The city was named in Hungarian after a castle steward named ''Suprun''. In 1153, it was mentioned as an important city. In 1273, King Otakar II of Bohemia occupied the castle. Sopronbánfalva
Sopronbánfalva (german: Wandorf), also known as Bánfalva, is a former village part of the city of Sopron, Hungary, since 1950. It is also called Kertváros (Garden-City in Hungarian) or Sopron-Kertváros. It is located west of the city center, at the northeastern foot of the Sopron Mountains, next to the road connecting Sopron with Brennbergbánya. History According to the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, in the western part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the city of Sopron and its surroundings were assigned to Austria. After an uprising in 1921 in this region, a referendum was held and 65.08% of the votes were in favor of belonging to Hungary. This referendum was accepted by the Entente Powers and Sopron and its surrounding 8 villages (including Sopronbánfalva) remained in Hungary. Fertőrákos
Fertőrákos (german: Kroisbach) is a village in the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron in Hungary. In 2001 it had a population of 2,182. It is located at , about from Sopron, near Lake Fertő (German: ''Neusiedler See'') and the Austrian border. In summer, a border checkpoint for pedestrians and cyclists connects it to the Austrian municipality of Mörbisch am See ( hu, Meggyes). The Fertorakos mithraeum is visible near the border. Fertőrákos also features a small port with a border checkpoint, and a sand beach swimming area, access to which prior to 1989 was restricted to the communist elite. The village was first mentioned in 1199 under the name ''Racus''. In 1457 it was first mentioned in German language as ''Krewspach'', later ''Kroisbach''.
