Lamar Jeffers
Lamar Jeffers (April 16, 1888 – June 1, 1983) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama. Born in Anniston, Alabama, Jeffers attended public schools and Alabama Presbyterian College at Anniston. He served with the Alabama National Guard from 1904 to 1914. He served as clerk of the circuit court of Calhoun County, taking office in January 1917. Jeffers resigned that office in May 1917 and entered the U.S. Army, serving with the Eighty-second Division in France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by the United States Government. He was promoted to rank of major of infantry. Jeffers was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Fred L. Blackmon. He was reelected to the Sixty-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from June 7, 1921, to January 3, 1935. Fred Blackmon
Fred Leonard Blackmon (September 15, 1873 – February 8, 1921) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama. Born at Lime Branch, Georgia, Blackmon moved with his parents to Calhoun County, Alabama, in 1883. He attended the public schools in DeArmanville and Choccolocco, the State normal college at Jacksonville, Alabama (now Jacksonville State University, Douglasville (Georgia) College, and Mountain City Business College, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from the law department of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1894. He was admitted to the bar in the same year and commenced practice in Anniston, Alabama. Blackmon served as city attorney for Anniston from 1898 until 1902, and served as member of the State senate from 1900 until 1910. He served as chairman of the congressional committee for the fourth Alabama district from 1906 until 1910, when he resigned. Mahlon Morris Garland (May 4, 1856 – November 19, 1920) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Early life and career Garland was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to Alexandria, Pennsylvania. He learned the trade of puddling and heating, and joined the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers, and later became president for the organization. He was a member of the select council of Pittsburgh in 1886 and 1887. Political career He was appointed by President William McKinley as the United States Collector of Customs (then called surveyor of customs) at Pittsburgh in 1898. He was reappointed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1902 and 1906 and by President William Taft in 1910, serving until March 3, 1915.
