1916 United States House of Representatives elections were held, coinciding with the re-election of President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson eked out a narrow re-election, but his Democratic Party lost seats to the Republican Party. Wilson's hybrid approach, which injected a progressive element into Democratic policies, had proved to be dissatisfying to much of the nation. Illinois's 7th Congressional District
The 7th congressional district of Illinois covers parts of Cook County, as of the 2011 redistricting that followed the 2010 census. All or parts of Bellwood, Chicago, Forest Park, Oak Park, Maywood, and Westchester are included. Democrat Danny K. Davis has represented the district since January 1997. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of D+37, it is the most Democratic district in Illinois. Due to reapportionment every ten years, the 7th district like other districts has relocated in Illinois throughout its history. In the mid-1800s, Abraham Lincoln represented the 7th district before being elected president, although his home now lies within Illinois's 13th congressional district and most of his district's former territory is now located in the 18th district. The 1908 United States House of Representatives elections were held, coinciding with the 1908 United States presidential election, which William Howard Taft won. Taft was not as popular as his predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt, but won with Roosevelt's backing, and his Republican Party lost only a handful of seats to the opposition Democrats. Without any striking national issues, the Republicans were able to remain in control. The 1906 United States House of Representatives elections were held in the middle of President Theodore Roosevelt's second term. As in many midterm elections, the President's Republican Party lost seats to the opposition Democratic Party, but retained a large overall majority. Dissatisfaction with working conditions and resentment toward union busting among industrial laborers in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest caused these groups to turn out to the polls in large numbers in support of the Democratic Party. However, gains in these regions were not enough to remove the Republican majority or the firm support that the party held among the middle class. Clay Freeman Gaumer
Clay Freeman Gaumer (March 14, 1870 ― May 20, 1952) was a Prohibitionist member of the Illinois House of Representatives during the 44th and 45th Illinois General Assemblies. A native of Alvin, Illinois, Gaumer was born March 14, 1870. He was first elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1904. Gaumer was reelected in 1906. In 1907, he introduced a constitutional amendment to create a statewide ban on alcohol consumption. He lost reelection in 1908. Gaumer would run for office on behalf of the Prohibition Party on a number of occasions after his time in the Illinois House of Representatives.
