1920 Birthday Honours (New Zealand)
The 1920 King's Birthday Honours in New Zealand, celebrating the official birthday of King George V, were appointments made by the King on the recommendation of the New Zealand government to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders. King George V
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. On Victoria's death in 1901, George's father ascended the throne as Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became king-emperor on his father's death in 1910. John Roberts (mayor)
Sir John Roberts (October 1845 – 13 September 1934) founder and managing partner of Murray Roberts & Co was a New Zealand businessman and runholder of the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the following century. He brought his family woollen business to New Zealand initially by opening a Dunedin branch of Melbourne's (and Galashiels') Sanderson Murray following that in 1873 by floating a public company to buy Mosgiel Woollen Mill established two years earlier by Arthur J Burns. He was appointed first chairman of its owners at the age of 28 and remained chairman until he died. Founder A J Burns, a grand-nephew of the great poet, was also a director. By this time Sanderson had withdrawn from the partnership and his place had been taken by young William Murray who was two years younger than Roberts. Dunedin
Dunedin ( ; mi, Ōtepoti) is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand (after Christchurch), and the principal city of the Otago region. Its name comes from , the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The city has a rich Scottish, Chinese and Māori heritage. Noel Brodrick
Thomas Noel Brodrick (25 December 1855 – 12 July 1931) was a New Zealand surveyor and public servant, serving as Surveyor-General of New Zealand from April to October 1920. Brodrick was born in Islington, London, England, on 25 December 1855 and arrived in New Zealand aboard the ''Nimroud'' in 1860. Brodrick was appointed district surveyor in 1888 and transferred to Timaru. Brodrick surveyed the mountain boundaries of many pastoral runs, whose Crown land leases were expiring. This involved a topographical survey and triangulation of most of the eastern side of the Southern Alps, from Rangitata River in the north to the Hunter River in the south. Department Of Lands And Survey
The Department of Lands and Survey was a former government department in New Zealand that managed the administration of Crown land and its survey and mapping requirements. History Establishment The department was established in 1876 with the appointment of John Turnbull Thomson as Surveyor-General. A major expansion took place in 1891 by combining the Department of the Surveyor-General and the Crown Lands Department into one agency. Its existence as an independent agency was consolidated with the passing of the Land Act 1892. Although the two agencies had merged, operationally they functioned separately until 1913. The minister responsible, from 1891, was the Minister of Lands. The head of the department initially held the titles of both preceding agencies as the Surveyor-General and Under-Secretary for Lands until 1906. The Birthday Honours, in some Commonwealth realms, mark the reigning British monarch's official birthday by granting various individuals appointment into national or dynastic orders or the award of decorations and medals. The honours are presented by the monarch or a viceregal representative. The Birthday Honours are one of two annual honours lists, along with the New Year Honours. All royal honours are published in the relevant gazette. History Honours have been awarded with few exceptions on the sovereign's birthday since at least 1860, during the reign of Queen Victoria. There was no Birthday Honours list issued in 1876, which brought "a good deal of disappointment" and even rebuke for the Ministry of Defence.
