1919–20 Blackpool F.C. Season
The 1919–20 season was Blackpool F.C.'s 19th season (16th consecutive) in the Football League. They competed in the 22-team Division Two, then the second tier of English football, finishing fourth. Joe Lane was the club's top scorer, with 28 goals (26 in the league and two in the FA Cup). Season synopsis Blackpool's League season began with three victories in their opening four fixtures. Inconsistency then took over until mid-October, when they managed to string four consecutive wins together. The unbeaten run continued for four more games, before a 3–0 home defeat to Huddersfield Town on 13 December blotted their copybook. Eleven wins in the second half of the campaign assisted in their fourth-placed finish. The club's FA Cup run ended in the second round, with a defeat at local rivals Preston North End. The failure of Glossop to be re-elected to the league meant that five new clubs joined the league. A resurrected Stoke, along with Coventry City, South Shields, Rotherham County and West Ham United joined the Second Division. Six of the seven players banned for their involvement in the 1915 British football betting scandal were re-instated in recognition of their service to the country during World War I. Joe Lane (footballer)
James Charles "Joe" Lane (11 July 1892 – February 1959) was an English professional footballer who played as a forward. After spells with Hungarian club Ferencváros and English side Sunderland, Lane signed for another English club, Blackpool, in 1913 for £400. He made his debut for the club on 22 November 1913, in a 2–2 draw at home to Leeds City, scoring one of Blackpool's goals. He went on to make a further 25 appearances during the 1913–14 campaign, scoring ten more goals. The following season, 1914–15, he was an ever-present in Blackpool's 38 league games and one FA Cup tie. He scored 28 goals, including two hat-tricks: one in the second league game of the season, a 3–1 victory at Hull City on 5 September 1914, and all of the goals in Blackpool's victory against Glossop at Bloomfield Road on 21 November. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup. Blackpool is a seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Located on the northwest coast of England, it is the main settlement within the borough also called Blackpool. The town is by the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre rivers, and is north of Liverpool and northwest of Manchester. West Lancashire Derby
The West Lancashire derby (sometimes also known as the '' M55 derby'') is a local rivalry in English football between Lancashire clubs Blackpool and Preston North End. The derby has taken place across all four tiers of English football, but not the top flight since the formation of the Premier League. Blackpool were promoted to the Premier League in 2010; Preston North End have yet to reach it. They did not meet in the League between the 2009–10 and 2020–21 seasons, but did so again in the 2021–22 EFL Championship campaign following Blackpool's promotion from the third tier.
