King George V
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment
The Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment was a mounted infantry regiment from New Zealand raised, in August 1914, for service during the First World War. It was assigned to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The regiment was established with twenty-six officers, 523 other ranks and 600 horses. It was formed from three squadrons belonging to pre war Territorial Force regiments: the 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles, the 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles and the 11th (North Auckland) Mounted Rifles. It included a small headquarters and, until 1916, a Maxim machine-gun section. During the war, the Maxim guns were withdrawn but the regiment's fire-power increased until each squadron had four Hotchkiss machine-guns, one per troop, by the end of the war. Hugh Acland (surgeon)
Sir Hugh Thomas Dyke Acland (10 September 1874 – 15 April 1956) was a New Zealand surgeon. Early life He was born in 1874 in Christchurch. Bishop Harper and Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet were his grandfathers; John Acland was his father and Jack Acland, MP for in the 1940s, was his son. The artist Bessie Acland was his sister. Acland was one of the first doctors in New Zealand who confined their medical practice to surgery. He joined the New Zealand Medical Corps for World War I and survived the sinking of the SS ''Marquette'' in 1915. In 1924, Acland bought Chippenham Lodge in Browns Road, St Albans, which had previously belonged to John Evans Brown. His family lived there for the rest of his life. The Mayor of Christchurch is the head of the municipal government of Christchurch, New Zealand, and presides over the Christchurch City Council. Henry Holland (7 December 1859 – 29 December 1944) was a New Zealand politician of the Reform Party, and Mayor of Christchurch from 1912 to 1919. Early life Holland was born in Nafferton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England in 1859. His parents were the farmers Ann and Robert Holland, a farm laborer. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 when Henry Holland was four, and settled in West Melton on an undeveloped farm. Holland received his education at a West Melton private school and the Halkett public school. He eventually began farming at Greendale on 100 acres in 1881. Four years later in October 1885, he married Jane Eastwood, a schoolteacher, in Christchurch; they would later have five sons and three daughters. Sir James Henry Gunson (26 October 1877 – 12 May 1963) was a New Zealand businessman and Mayor of Auckland City from 1915 to 1925. He was knighted in 1924.
