''Knattspyrnufélagið Fram'' (''Fram Football Club'') is an Icelandic sports club, best known for its football and handball teams. It was founded on 1 May 1908 in Reykjavík. It was based at Safamýri, in the Háaleiti og Bústaðir district near Reykjavík city centre before slowly moving operations to the newly established Grafarholt district. The football team currently plays in the second division, the 1. deild karla after being relegated in the 2014 season. The club also has strong handball teams; the men's team won the Icelandic championship in 2013. Other sports offered by the club include basketball, taekwondo and skiing. Football Fram is one of the most successful clubs in Iceland: it has eighteen national championship titles and seven national cup titles, and it is regarded as one of the biggest teams in Iceland and the best known Icelandic football team in Europe. Úrvalsdeild Karla (football)
The Úrvalsdeild karla (, Men's Select Division) is the highest men's football league in Iceland. It has been played since 1912. Because of the harsh winters in Iceland, it is generally played in the spring and summer (May to September). It is governed by the Football Association of Iceland (KSI) and has 12 teams. By end of season 2015–2016, UEFA ranked the league No. 35 in Europe. From 27 April 2009, the league has had an active agreement on the league's name rights with Ölgerðin, the Icelandic franchisee for Pepsi. From the 2019 season onwards, the league is popularly referred to as Pepsi Max deildin (The Pepsi Max League). The clubs play each other home and away. At the end of each season, the two teams with the fewest points are relegated to 1. deild karla (First Division), from which two top point teams promote to the higher tier. Friðþjófur Thorsteinsson
Friðþjófur Thorsteinsson Pétursson (28 August 1895 – 13 April 1967) was an Icelandic footballer, coach and former chairman of Fram. He is considered one of Iceland's first great footballers. Early life and family Friðþjófur was the son of the entrepreneur Pétur J. Thorsteinsson and Ásthildur Guðmundsdóttir. He was born in Bíldudalur, Iceland, and later grew up in Copenhagen and Reykjavík. Among Friðþjófur's siblings were Gunnar Thorsteinsson, who for a time was the chairman of Fram and Samúel Thorsteinsson, one of the leading footballers that Iceland has produced and later a member of the Denmark men's national football team. They were all brothers of the artist Guðmundur "Muggur" Thorsteinsson. Football career Friðþjófur started participating in football while attending school in Denmark. Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur, commonly referred to as Víkingur or Víkingur Reykjavík (to distinguish them from Víkingur Ólafsvík) and internationally known as Vikingur F.C., is an Icelandic sports club based in the Fossvogur neighbourhood of Reykjavík. It is one of the oldest sports clubs in Iceland, founded on 21 April 1908. The football club has won six Championship titles, five First Division titles and four Cup titles. Víkingur operates other sports divisions including handball, tennis, table tennis, karate and skiing. All sports include both male and female teams. The Valur men's football team, commonly known as Valur, is the men's football department of the Knattspyrnufélagið Valur multi-sport club. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland, and currently plays in the Besta deild karla, the top-tier men's football league in Iceland. The team plays it home games at Hlíðarendi located in Reykjavík. The team's colors are red and white. Valur has spent most of it´s time in Icelandic top flight football, having only played 3 seasons in the clubs history outside the top tier. Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (Reykjavík Football Club), often shortened to KR or KR Reykjavík, is an Icelandic football club based in the Vesturbær district of the capital, Reykjavík.
