South Armagh (UK Parliament Constituency)
South Armagh was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. Boundaries and boundary changes This constituency comprised the southern part of County Armagh. From 1885 to 1918 the constituency was bounded to the north and north-west by Mid Armagh, to the south-west by South Monaghan, to the south by North Louth, to the south-east by the Borough of Newry and to the east by South Down. In 1918, that part of the constituency in the urban district of Newry was added to the South Down constituency. The Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP; commonly called the Irish Party or the Home Rule Party) was formed in 1874 by Isaac Butt, the leader of the Nationalist Party, replacing the Home Rule League, as official parliamentary party for Irish nationalist Members of Parliament (MPs) elected to the House of Commons at Westminster within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland up until 1918. Its central objectives were legislative independence for Ireland and land reform. Its constitutional movement was instrumental in laying the groundwork for Irish self-government through three Irish Home Rule bills. Charles O'Neill (Irish Nationalist Politician)
Charles O'Neill (1849 – 14 January 1918) was an Irish nationalist politician and Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He was first stood for election as the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) candidate for the South Armagh constituency at the 1900 general election, but was defeated by the Healyite Nationalist MP John Campbell. Patrick Donnelly (Irish Politician)
Patrick Donnelly (20 July 1878 – 13 August 1947) was an Irish solicitor and nationalist politician and MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Early life A native of Draperstown, County Londonderry, Donnelly was born on 20 July 1878, the son of Patrick Donnelly, a spirit merchant and farmer, and his wife, Sarah Convery. He was educated privately and at Queen's College Belfast. He served his solicitor's apprenticeship with Michael McCartan, the MP for South Down. He qualified in 1905. Donnelly was living in Camlough at the time of the 1901 census. In 1909 in Belfast, he married Susanna Rogers, of Draperstown. Politics Donnelly was first elected as member of the Irish Parliamentary Party at the by-election of 2 February 1918, and re-elected in the 1918 UK general election, representing the South Armagh constituency. Patrick McCartan
Patrick McCartan (13 May 1878 – 28 March 1963) was an Irish republican and politician. He served the First Dáil (1919–1921) on diplomatic missions to the United States and Soviet Russia. He returned to public life in 1948, serving in Seanad Éireann for Clann na Poblachta. McCartan was also a doctor. Early life He was born in Eskerbuoy, near Carrickmore, County Tyrone, one of five children, to Bernard McCartan, a farmer, and the former Bridget Rafferty (d. 1918). He emigrated to the USA as a young man and became a member of Clan na Gael in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and edited the journal ''Irish Freedom''. He returned to Ireland some years later and qualified as a doctor. He also continued working with nationalist politics and worked closely with Bulmer Hobson and Denis McCullough with the Dungannon Clubs and the Irish Republican Brotherhood.
