The 1916 USC Trojans football team represented the University of Southern California (USC) as an independent during the 1916 college football season The 1916 college football season had no very clear cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Army and Pittsburgh as national champions. Only Pittsburgh claims a national championship for the 1916 season. G .... In their third non-consecutive year under head coach Dean Cromwell (Cromwell was also coach in 1909 and 1910), the Trojans compiled a 5–3 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 129 to 80. The season featured USC's first game against Arizona, a 20–7 victory in Phoenix, its third game against California, a 27–0 loss in Los Angeles, and its second game against Oregon Agricultural, a 16–7 loss in Los Angeles. Dean Cromwell
Dean Bartlett Cromwell (September 20, 1879 – August 3, 1962), nicknamed "Maker of Champions", was an American athletic coach in multiple sports, principally at the University of Southern California (USC). He was the head coach of the USC track team from 1909 to 1948, excepting 1914 and 1915, and guided the team to 12 NCAA team national championships (1926, 1930–31, 1935–43) and 34 individual NCAA titles. He was the head coach for the U.S. track team at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, and assistant head coach for the U.S. track team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In Berlin he was responsible for the expulsion of the only two Jewish American sprinters (Sam Stoller and Marty Glickman) from the 4x100m relay team, while trying to appease Adolf Hitler. Fiesta Park was a grandstand and sports and entertainment venue in South Park, Los Angeles, California. From 1894 to 1916, it served as venue for various exhibitions and festivals, as well as a field for USC Trojans football games. Sherman Indian High School (SIHS) is an off-reservation boarding high school for Native Americans. Originally opened in 1892 as the Perris Indian School, in Perris, California, the school was relocated to Riverside, California in 1903, under the name Sherman Institute.
