1916 Birthday Honours
The 1916 Birthday Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of The King, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' and in ''The Times'' on 3 June 1916. Owing to the ongoing War, the 50-page supplement to ''The Gazette'' included 3,880 names of recipients of honours, military promotion of rank and medals, including the Military Cross (708 people, among them the Prince of Wales), Distinguished Service Order (373) and 1,217 Military Medals. In addition, more than 500 nurses from across the British Empire received the Royal Red Cross, a huge number noted by ''The British Journal of Nursing'' in its issue on 10 June: "The inclusion of so many members of the nursing profession (516) in the Birthday Honours' list is a unique event, and we most cordially congratulate those Matrons, Sisters and Nurses who have earned this d ... George V
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until Death and state funeral of George V, his death in 1936. Born during the reign of his grandmother Queen Victoria, George was the second son of Edward VII, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, and was third in the line of succession to the British throne behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. From 1877 to 1892, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. Sir Gilbert Parker, 1st Baronet
Sir Horatio Gilbert George Parker, 1st Baronet (23 November 1862 – 6 September 1932), known as Gilbert Parker, Canadian novelist and British politics, politician, was born at Camden East, Addington, Ontario, Addington, Ontario, the son of Captain Joseph Parker, R.A. Education and employment He was educated as a teacher in Ottawa and taught at Marsh Hill and Bayside schools in Hastings County before becoming a teacher at the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf, Ontario Institute for the Deaf and Dumb (in Belleville, Ontario) in 1882. From there he went on to lecture at University of Trinity College, Trinity College. In 1886, he went to Australia, and for a while became associate editor of the ''Sydney Morning Herald''. He also traveled extensively in the Pacific, Europe, Asia, Egypt, the South Sea Islands and subsequently in northern Canada. Ernest William Moir
Sir Ernest William Moir (9 June 1862 – 14 June 1933) was a British civil engineer and the first Moir baronet. He is credited with inventing the first medical airlock while working on the Hudson River Tunnel in New York in 1889. Early life The son of Alexander Mitchell Moir and of Scottish descent, he was born in London and was educated at University College School. At a young age he showed a great interest in mechanics and became expert in mechanical and engineering work while in college. Aged about 15, Moir joined the engineering works of Messrs. Robert Napier and Sons in Glasgow where he served an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer. He studied engineering at University College London before joining the firm of William Arrol in Glasgow where he started in the drawing office. Algernon Methuen
Sir Algernon Marshall Stedman Methuen, Baronet (23 February 1856 – 20 September 1924) was an English publishing, publisher and a teacher of Classics and French language, French. He is best known for founding the publishing company Methuen Publishing, Methuen & Co. Background and education Methuen was born as Algernon Methuen Marshall Stedman in London, the third son of John Buck Stedman, Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, FRCS, and Jane Elizabeth née Marshall. Sir Edward Holt, 1st Baronet
There have been two Holt baronetcies created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Holt baronetcy of Cheetham, Lancashire, was created on 8 July 1916 for Edward Holt, former Lord Mayor of Manchester. He was succeeded in 1928 by his son, also Edward, on whose death the baronetcy became extinct. The Holt baronetcy of Liverpool was created on 30 January 1935 for Richard Durning Holt, MP and became extinct on his death. Sir Eustace Edward Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 1st Baronet (29 February 1864 – 9 February 1943), known as Sir Eustace Fiennes, was a British soldier, Liberal politician and colonial administrator. Bertram Godfray Falle, 1st Baron Portsea (21 November 1859 – 1 November 1948), known as Sir Bertram Falle, Bt, between 1916 and 1930, was a Jersey-born barrister and politician in the United Kingdom. Background and education Falle was born on Jersey in the Channel Islands, the son of Joshua George Falle (1820–1903), Constable of Saint Helier and later Jurat of the Royal Court of Jersey, and Mary Elizabeth (née Godfray; died 1917). Sir Thomas Dunlop, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Dunlop, 1st Baronet (2 August 1855 – 29 January 1938) was a Scottish businessman. Life Dunlop was the eldest son of Thomas Dunlop (1831–1893), a grain merchant and founder of the shipping company, Thomas Dunlop & Sons, and his wife, Robina Jack. He became a senior partner in his father's company and later a director of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Bruce Peebles Ltd and the Scottish Union and National Insurance Company. In 1914, he became Lord Provost of Glasgow and was created a baronet in 1916 due to this position and appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 1918. Dunlop is buried with his family in the Glasgow Necropolis. The grave lies on the southern path of the main upper section. Devitt Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Devitt, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. One creation is extant as of 2007. The Devitt Baronetcy, of Chelsea in the County of London, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 4 July 1916 for the shipowner Thomas Devitt. He was a senior partner in the firm of Devitt and Moore, a manager of the Orient Line and the founder of the Nautical College, Pangbourne. He was succeeded by his grandson, the second Baronet. As of 2007 the title is held by the latter's son, the third Baronet, who succeeded in 1995. The Devitt Baronetcy, of Pangbourne in the County of Berkshire, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 25 June 1931 for Philip Henry Devitt. Arthur Du Cros
Sir Arthur Philip Du Cros, 1st Baronet (26 January 1871 – 28 October 1955) was a British industrialist and politician. Early life and education Du Cros was born in Dublin on 26 January 1871, the third of seven sons of Harvey du Cros and his wife Annie Jane Roy. In his childhood, his father was only a bookkeeper with an income of £170 a year and Arthur grew up in modest circumstances. He attended a national school in Dublin and entered the civil service at the lowest-paid grade. Business career In 1892 he joined his father and brothers in Dublin's Pneumatic Tyre and Booth's Cycle Agency. This business had been set up in 1889 by Harvey du Cros and J B Dunlop to exploit Dunlop's pneumatic tyre. Arthur was made general manager. Robert Hudson Borwick, 1st Baron Borwick (21 January 1845 – 27 January 1936), known as Sir Robert Borwick from 1902 to 1916, and as Sir Robert Borwick, 1st Baronet from 1916 to 1922, was a British businessman and a Justice of the Peace for the County of London. William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (25 May 1879 – 9 June 1964), generally known as Lord Beaverbrook, was a Canadian-British newspaper publisher and backstage politician who was an influential figure in British media and politics of the first half of the 20th century. His base of power was the largest circulation newspaper in the world, the ''Daily Express'', which appealed to the conservative working class with intensely patriotic news and editorials.
