1914 Kenwood House Ball
A ball was held at Kenwood House, London, by Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia on 11 June 1914. The ball was held in honour of Michael's daughters Anastasia and Nadejda and marked the coming-out of the latter, who was aged 18. It was attended by a large number of British and foreign nobility, including King George V and Queen Mary, and was one of the last big social events before the start of the First World War. The night featured a dinner and dance demonstration by Maurice Mouvet and Florence Walton. The latter was the first royal command performance by American dancers; Mary specifically requested a demonstration of the controversial tango as she had not seen one before. Walter John Francis Erskine, 12th Earl of Mar and 14th Earl of Kellie (29 August 1865 – 3 June 1955) was a Scottish nobleman. Biography The eldest son of Walter Erskine, 11th Earl of Mar and Mary Anne Forbes, he was educated at Eton and served as a 2nd lieutenant and then lieutenant in the Scots Guards from 1887–92. Alice Emily Coke, Countess of Leicester, (''née'' White; 29 September 1855 – 24 April 1936), styled The Honourable Alice White from 1873 to 1879 and Viscountess Coke from 1879 to 1909, was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat active in the British Red Cross during the First World War.
