1912 VFL Grand Final
The 1912 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the South Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 28 September 1912. It was the 15th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1912 VFL season. The match, attended by 54,436 spectators, was won by Essendon by a margin of 14 points, marking that club's third premiership victory and second in succession. Wally Chalmers
Walter Henry Chalmers (16 September 1890 – 17 November 1966) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Recruited from Carlton District, Chalmers was a wingman and debuted for Essendon in the 1911 season. He played in that year's premiership side and in another premiership side the following year. His career was interrupted by the First World War but he returned to Essendon in 1918 for one final season. Harry Saltau (17 September 1891 – 25 July 1956) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Jack Worrall
John Worrall (20 June 1861 – 17 November 1937) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the VFA, and a Test cricketer. He was also a prominent coach in both sports and a journalist. A small, nuggety man with broad shoulders, pink complexion and intense brown eyes, Worrall was one of Australia's great all-round sports people of the nineteenth century, and was involved in Australian football and cricket at the elite level for many decades. After his retirement, he coached both sports, and is considered the "father" of Australian football coaching. Worrall had an extended career as a sporting journalist, and he was a highly respected member of the press box right up until his death in 1937. Percy Ogden
Percival Gordon Ogden (24 February 1886 – 13 July 1967) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A rover, Ogden started his career with Collingwood in 1905. He played just four games with the club before moving to Association team Preston and did not return to the VFL until 1910 with Essendon. Ogden was a member of Essendon's back-to-back premiership wins in 1911 and 1912. After Essendon disbanded during the Great War, Ogden was captain-coach of Preston (then in junior ranks) in 1916–17 before returning when Essendon resumed in 1918. He spent 1919 as captain and the following two were as captain-coach. Ogden effectively retired from League ranks and was captain-coach of Northcote (where he lived) in 1922. Fred Baring
Frederick Albert Baring (15 December 1890 – 10 December 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. In 1997 he was named at fullback in Essendon's official Team of the Century. He also played first-class cricket for Victoria. Allan Belcher
Allan Belcher (2 December 1884 – 2 July 1921) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the brother of South Melbourne player Vic Belcher. Belcher started his career with Collingwood but it was with Essendon that he established himself as one of the premier ruckmen in the league. Known as "King Belcher" formed a combination in the ruck with Fred Baring and Ernie Cameron, culminating in premiership success in 1912. Lewis Edward Armstrong (8 February 1885 – 30 August 1926) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Jim Martin (Australian Footballer)
Jim "Bull" Martin (20 August 1884 – 12 October 1940) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton, Essendon and Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Martin played mostly as a forward, often in the pocket. He only made six appearances for Carlton in his debut season and the following year switched to Northcote. A strongly built and physical player, Martin returned to the league in 1907, with Essendon, playing there for the next seven years. Despite only kicking 16 goals in 1907, it was enough to top the goal-kicking at Essendon. He played in Essendon's losing 1908 Grand Final side. He missed out on their 1911 premiership when he received a twelve-week suspension mid-season for striking George Holden of Fitzroy. Patrick Augustus Shea (16 March 1886 – 29 May 1954) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and also a first-class cricketer with Victoria. Frank Caine
Frank Caine (28 July 1881 – 19 January 1930) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League. Football Caine made his debut for the Carlton Football Club against St Kilda in Round 7 of the 1905 season. He went on to play 80 games and kick 147 goals for the Blues. In a huge coup for North Melbourne, Caine was poached from Carlton in early 1910 along with ‘Mallee’ Johnson, Fred Jinks, and Charlie Hammond. He helped North to their third VFA premiership in 1910, and also topped the Association's goalkicking standings for that season, kicking a new record of 75 goals (including finals).
