1911 Arizona Gubernatorial Election
The 1911 Arizona gubernatorial election took place on December 12, 1911, for the post of the first elected List of Governors of Arizona, Governor of Arizona. The Democratic Party (United States), Democratic nominee George W. P. Hunt defeated the Republican Party (United States), Republican nominee Edmund W. Wells. Hunt and Wells were both members of the Constitutional Convention, Hunt being chosen President and leading the way for much of the drafting. Wells refused to sign the Constitution of Arizona, Constitution, considering aspects like the initiative, referendum, and especially judicial recall to be too radical. These fears proved prophetic when it was originally rejected by fellow Republican, former judge, and incumbent President William Howard Taft. George Wylie Paul Hunt (November 1, 1859 – December 24, 1934) was an American politician and businessman. He was the List of Governors of Arizona, first governor of Arizona, serving a total of seven terms, along with President of the convention that wrote Arizona Constitution, Arizona's constitution. In addition, Hunt served in both houses of the Arizona Territorial Legislature and was posted as United States Ambassador to Thailand, U.S. Minister to Siam by Woodrow Wilson. Calling himself the "Old Walrus", Hunt was tall, close to , bald, and had a drooping handlebar moustache. Edmund William Wells
Edmund William Wells (February 14, 1846 – July 4, 1938) was an American jurist, businessman, and politician. Known as "Arizona's first millionaire", he was considered the richest man in Arizona during his attempt to be elected Governor of Arizona. He served as Attorney General of the Arizona Territory before being appointed as a judge. He also served as a member of Arizona's constitutional convention. Background Wells was born to Edmund William and May Louise (Arnold) Wells on February 14, 1846, near Lancaster, Ohio. In 1852, his family moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa, where he attended public schools. Richard Elihu Sloan (June 22, 1857 – December 13, 1933) was an American jurist and politician, who served as Associate Justice of the Arizona Territorial Supreme Court, a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona and as the 17th and final Governor of Arizona Territory. William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857March 8, 1930) was the 27th president of the United States (1909–1913) and the tenth chief justice of the United States (1921–1930), the only person to have held both offices.
