The 1910 Upper Hunter state by-election was held on 13 April 1910 for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Upper Hunter. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of William Fleming () to unsuccessfully contest the federal seat of New England at the 1910 election. The by-election and those for Darling Harbour and Queanbeyan were held on the same day as the 1910 Federal election. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Results Of The 1907 New South Wales State Election
The 1907 New South Wales state election involved 90 electoral districts returning one member each. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. In this election, 7 members did not stand for re-election, in 11 electorates the winning candidate received less than 50% of the votes, while 5 were uncontested. There were 23 seats that elected a member from a different party, while a further 5 seats where the member retained the seat but changed from the Progressive Party to the Liberal Reform Party, continuing the demise of the Progressive Party, from a high of 42 seats at the 1901 election. Four months before the election the party had negotiated a coalition agreement with the Liberal Reform Party however this was rejected by a vote of parliamentary members. William Ashford (Australian Politician)
William George Ashford (9 August 1874 – 23 March 1925) was an Australian politician. Early life Born at Sparks Creek near Scone to selector John Ashford and Rebecca Bell, he attended Sparks Creek Public School before starting work on his father's farm. He later bought a farm on the Hawkesbury River, but sold it to return to Sparks Creek. Around 1904 he married Lily Charlotte Keys Brecht, with whom he had four sons. Parliamentary career He stood for election to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the candidate for Upper Hunter at the 1907 election, but was unsuccessful. In 1910 the sitting member William Fleming () resigned to unsuccessfully contest a federal seat at the 1910 election and Ashford won the April 1910 by-election. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The seat is currently held by Dave Layzell for the National Party after he was elected at a by-election to replace Michael Johnsen. Upper Hunter covers the entirety of Dungog Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire, Liverpool Plains Shire (excluding the area around Werris Creek), the northern half of Singleton Shire (including Singleton itself), northeastern Mid-Western Regional Council (including Bylong) and part of Mid-Coast Council. The 1910 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 13 April 1910. All 75 seats in the House of Representatives, and 18 of the 36 seats in the Senate were up for election.
