1909–10 Aston Villa F.C. Season
The 1909-10 English football season was the 22nd season in the Football League for Aston Villa, who finished the season as the league's champions for a then record sixth time. This season saw a straight fight between Villa and Liverpool and they finished well clear of the rest. Villa’s record included a 15-match run without defeat. They built on this to finish five points ahead of Liverpool. The Villa team included centre-forward Harry Hampton and inside-forward Joe Bache. In their Villa careers, Hampton scored 213 goals in 338 appearances and Bache 167 in 431. Hampton was just 5 ft 8in tall and was a fearless, fast moving player on the field. The ever-present outside-right Charlie Wallace also enjoyed a long career at the club, scoring 54 goals in 314 League games. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'. As a player he was the first Aston Villa captain to lift a trophy, being instrumental in establishing the club as force in the game. A pioneer of the passing game, which he learned in his native Scotland, Aston Villa became renowned for their short, quick combination passing under his leadership. His trophy haul of six League Championships and six FA Cups established Aston Villa as the most successful club in England. He has been described as the world's first paid football manager. Frederick Rinder
Frederick William Rinder (July 1858, Liverpool – 25 December 1938, Harborne, Birmingham) was a committee member and later influential chairman of Aston Villa F.C. during the club's 'Golden Age'. During Rinder's time as chairman, a period of 27 years, the Villa established themselves as the most successful football club in England winning no fewer than 6 League Championships and 5 FA Cups. The 1909–10 FA Cup was the 39th season of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Newcastle United won the competition for the first time, beating Barnsley 2–0 in the replay of the final at Goodison Park in Liverpool, through two goals from Albert Shepherd. The first match, held at Crystal Palace, London, was a 1–1 draw. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held at neutral venues until a winner was determined. The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. Joseph Harry Hampton (21 April 1885 – 15 March 1963) was an English footballer who was born in Wellington, Shropshire. To this day Hampton remains Aston Villa's all-time leading goalscorer in the League. Joe Bache
Joseph William Bache (8 February 1880 – 10 November 1960), was an English footballer who played for Aston Villa. Joe Bache was a prolific centre forward for Aston Villa between 1900 and 1919. He played for the England national team seven times, and during that period scored four goals for his country, one in each of his first four appearances. He was one of Aston Villa's all-time greatest forwards, enjoying a successful career at the club, winning an FA Cup winners medal in both 1905 and 1913. He was also a vital part of the Villa team that won the League Championship in 1910. Bache appeared for the team 474 times and had scored a total of 185 goals at the end of his career. Bache joined the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War and went on to serve on the Western Front, where he rose to the rank of Lance-Corporal.
