Edinburgh West (UK Parliament Constituency)
Edinburgh West is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, first contested at the 1885 general election. Prior to the 2005 general election, the boundaries were the same as the eponymous constituency of the Scottish Parliament, which had been created in 1999. This commuter belt seat, distinctively in the city, was Unionist/Conservative for over 65 years, from the 1931 general election until the 1997 general election, although the Liberal/SDP Alliance and later the Liberal Democrats repeatedly came close to winning in the 1980s and early 1990s. After 1997, the seat was held by the Liberal Democrats until the 2015 general election. The Member of Parliament (MP) between the 2015 and 2017 general elections was Michelle Thomson, who was elected for the Scottish National Party (SNP) in May 2015. The Liberal Unionist Party was a British political party that was formed in 1886 by a faction that broke away from the Liberal Party. Led by Lord Hartington (later the Duke of Devonshire) and Joseph Chamberlain, the party established a political alliance with the Conservative Party in opposition to Irish Home Rule. Lewis McIver
Sir Lewis McIver, 1st Baronet (6 March 1846 – 9 August 1920) was a British Liberal Unionist politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1885 and 1909. Biography McIver was the son of John McIver, secretary of the Presidency Bank of Madras. He was educated at Kensington Grammar School and at Bonn University. He served for a while in the Indian Civil Service and was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1878. McIver was elected as the Member of Parliament for Torquay at the 1885 general election, and represented it until his defeat in 1886. He joined the Liberal Unionist Party at the split in 1886, and unsuccessfully contested Edinburgh South at the 1892 general election. James Avon Clyde, Lord Clyde
James Avon Clyde, Lord Clyde, (14 November 1863 – 16 June 1944) was a Scottish politician and judge. Early life Clyde was born on 14 November 1863, the son of Dr James Clyde LLD (1821-1912). His father was a teacher at Dollar Academy and then at Edinburgh Academy. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with an MA 1884 and an LLB in 1888. Career Clyde was called to the Scots Bar in 1889, and by the times he was appointed a King's Counsel (KC) in August 1901, he was the leading junior counsel in Scotland. As a KC, he was retained by several railway companies and frequently appeared before the Law Lords. He was later Dean of the Faculty of Advocates from 1915 to 1918.
