1902 United States House Of Representatives Elections In Virginia
The 1902 United States House of Representatives elections occurred in the middle of President Theodore Roosevelt's first term, about a year after the assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901. Due to the increased size of the House and the reapportionment that resulted from the 1900 U.S. Census, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party both gained seats simultaneously, which has not occurred in any elections since. The Democrats increased their share of the House, but not by enough to regain control. With a stable economy and no cornerstone issue, Democratic gains can mostly be linked to the effects of redistricting. Many of the new seats were in areas with high numbers of immigrants (mostly Eastern and Southern European industrial workers, and Northern European farmers), with new immigrants tending to vote Democrat. Campbell Slemp
Campbell Slemp (December 2, 1839 – October 13, 1907) was a farmer and Confederate officer in southwest Virginia who became a Readjuster Democrat after Congressional Reconstruction and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. He eventually joined the Republican Party and won election to the United States House of Representatives from Virginia's 9th congressional district and controlled federal patronage in the Commonwealth from 1903 to 1907. Slemp died unexpectedly at home while in office, after which his son C. Bascom Slemp succeeded to the seat for more than a decade, until being ousted by the rising Byrd Organization. Joel Cook (March 20, 1842December 15, 1910) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives for Pennsylvania's 2nd congressional district from 1907 to 1910. Biography Joel Cook was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Central High School in 1859. He studied law with William B. Reed and at the University of Pennsylvania. He was admitted to the bar in 1863. He practiced law for a few years but left the profession to become a journalist. During the American Civil War, Cook was a correspondent in Washington, D.C., and with the Army of the Potomac for the Philadelphia Press. He was on the editorial staff of the ''Philadelphia Public Ledger'' from 1865 to 1882, and the financial editor from 1883 to 1907.
