The 1904 SAFA Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Norwood Football Club and the Port Adelaide Football Club, held at the Jubilee Oval in Adelaide on 17 September 1904. It was the 9th annual Grand Final of the South Australian Football Association, staged to determine the premiers for the 1904 SAFA season. Jubilee Oval (Adelaide)
The Jubilee Oval was a sporting ground created in 1895 between the Jubilee Exhibition Building and the River Torrens. It was located next to the railway station at the end of the Jubilee Exhibition Railway line, which operated from 1887 to 1927. It incorporated a (banked) cycle racing track, and a new grandstand and seating on the mound were built in 1896. It was created, in part for the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society as a venue for the Royal Adelaide Show, replacing their "Old Exhibition Grounds", which had been home to the Show for fifty years. The Autumn Show was held at the Jubilee Building in May 1895, with the horse events being held on the Oval. In 1896 the first Live Stock Show was held at the new site. Philip Mesmer Newland (2 February 1875 – 11 August 1916) was an Australian sportsman who excelled at Australian rules football, cricket and lacrosse. He played Sheffield Shield cricket for South Australia as a wicket-keeper and toured England with the Australian Test team in 1905. Life and career Newland was a member of the noted Newland family of South Australia. His father was author Simpson Newland and he was the brother of surgeon Henry Simpson Newland and politician Victor Marra Newland. Phil Newland was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide, and the University of Adelaide, where he studied law. He was called to the Bar in 1899. Newland made his first-class and Sheffield Shield debut in 1899/00 but had to wait over two years to make his second appearance.
