The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) was one of the first collegiate athletic conferences in the United States. Twenty-seven of the current Division I FBS (formerly Division I-A) football programs were members of this conference at some point, as were at least 19 other schools. Charles Eshleman
Charles Leverich Eshleman (May 18, 1880 – June 6, 1976) was an American physician and college football coach. He served as the Tulane University football coach for one season, and amassed a 2–2–1 record in 1903. Biography Eshleman was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 18, 1880 to parents Benjamin Franklin and Fannie (née Leverich) Eshleman.J. F. Hyer''The Story of Louisiana, Volume 2'' p. 222, 1960. He attended Tulane University, where he played college football from 1898 to 1900 as a fullback and halfback. He served as the team captain in 1898 and 1899. Eshleman returned to coach Tulane for the 1903 season, and his team amassed a 2–2–1 record. While at Tulane, he set the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association record in the 220-yard dash at 23.2 seconds. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. Athletic Park (New Orleans)
Athletic Park was a sports stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana which opened in 1901. Some sources say the ballpark was located on the south side of Tulane Avenue between South Carrollton Avenue and South Pierce Street. The Sanborn map from 1908 shows the actual boundaries as Tulane Avenue (northeast, right field), Scott Street (southeast, first base), the proposed Gravier Street extension, and then railroad tracks and the canal (southwest, third base); and the proposed Pierce Street extension (northwest, overlapping left field). Carrolton Avenue was a block west of Pierce. When the Pelicans moved a few blocks up the street to Pelican Park, this site was replaced by an amusement park called White City. The Pelicans would move back to this area a few years later and build a new facility called Heinemann Park. It was home to the New Orleans Pelicans baseball organization from 1901 to 1908. The 1903 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association football season was the college football games played by the member schools of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association as part of the 1903 college football season. The season began on September 25. 1903 met difficulty in determining an SIAA champion. Clemson had the best record, but lost to an inferior North Carolina team; and in the game to secure the SIAA title were tied by Cumberland. Clemson's John Heisman pushed strongly for Cumberland to share the SIAA title. Cumberland's strongest victory was its win over Vanderbilt. However, Sewanee beat Cumberland, yet suffered its only loss to Vanderbilt. Heisman originally challenged the winner of the Vanderbilt-Sewanee game. John J. Tigert was a star player for Vanderbilt. The 1903 Cumberland Bulldogs football team represented Cumberland University in the 1903 college football season. The team was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA), compiling a 6–1–1 record.
