1902 Alabama Crimson Tide Football Team
The 1902 Alabama Crimson White football team (variously "Alabama", "UA" or "Bama") represented the University of Alabama in the 1902 college football season. The team was led by head coach Eli Abbott, in his only season of his second stint (fourth season overall), and played their home games at The Quad in Tuscaloosa and at West End Park in Birmingham, Alabama. James O. Heyworth served as a co-head coach with Abbott for the season. In what was the tenth season of Alabama football, the team finished with a record of four wins and four losses (4–4, 2–4 SIAA). Eli Abbott
Eli Abbott (April 1, 1869 – February 13, 1943) was an American football player and coach of football and baseball. He played college football at the University of Alabama and the University of Pennsylvania and coached the Alabama Crimson Tide football team from 1893 to 1895 and again in 1902. Early years Abbott was born in Mississippi in 1869. He was the son of James O. and Emily Abbott, both of whom were Mississippi natives. At the time of the 1880 United States Census, Abbott was living with his parents and three brothers in Okolona, Mississippi. Athlete and coach Abbott attended the University of Alabama and played at tackle on Alabama's inaugural football team in 1892. He later attended the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a bachelor of science degree in 1896. He played varsity football and baseball at Penn. Auxford Burks
Bennett Auxford "B. A." Burks, Jr. (January 24, 1883 – February 24, 1938) was a college football player and physician. University of Alabama Burks was a prominent running back for the Alabama Crimson White of the University of Alabama from 1902 to 1906. He was said to be the school's "first running back hero" who would "carry whole teams on his back." He was nominated though not selected for an ''Associated Press'' All-Time Southeast 1869-1919 era team. At Alabama he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. 1905 Burks was captain of the 1905 team, selected All-Southern the same year. Burks starred in the opening win of 17 to 0 over Maryville. The conversion, try (American football, also known as a point(s) after touchdown, PAT, or (depending on the number of points) extra point/2-point conversion), or convert (Canadian football) occurs immediately after a touchdown during which the scoring team is allowed to attempt to score one extra point by kicking the ball through the uprights in the manner of a field goal, or two points by bringing the ball into the end zone in the manner of a touchdown. A field goal (FG) is a means of scoring in gridiron football. To score a field goal, the team in possession of the ball must place kick, or drop kick, the ball through the goal, i.e., between the uprights and over the crossbar. The entire ball must pass through the vertical plane of the goal, which is the area above the crossbar and between the uprights or, if above the uprights, between their outside edges.
