The Football World Championship, also known as the United Kingdom Championship or the International Club Championship, was a exhibition association football match played between the English and Scottish club champions on a regular, but not annual, basis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with varying degrees of press attention and public interest. Perhaps the most widely publicised at the time under the 'World Championship' name was the 1888 event between Renton and West Bromwich Albion, while in the modern age interest from historians has drawn more attention to matches involving Sunderland, particularly the 1895 match. The FA Cup and Scottish Cup were qualification of the tournament. Sandy Tait
Alexander Gilchrist Tait (3 December 1871 – 6 April 1949) was a Scottish professional footballer who played full back for teams including Glenburn Athletic, Ayr, Royal Albert F.C., Rangers, Motherwell, Preston North End, Tottenham Hotspur, Leyton and Croydon Common. He is also distantly related to British cricketer Andrew Flintoff. Football career Sandy Tait was one of 13 children and worked as a pitboy leading the pit ponies while beginning his career at local club Glenbuck Athletic. He had a brief spell with Ayr and spent three years with Royal Albert but no league appearances are recorded for either of these initial clubs. Tait had a loan spell with Rangers in 1891–92 making his debut at left back in the Scottish League on 12 September 1891 in a 6–1 win at Vale of Leven. Albert Buick
Albert Thoroughgood Buick (17 January 1875 – 25 March 1948) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Arbroath, Heart of Midlothian and Portsmouth. Born in Arbroath, Buick started his career with home-town Arbroath F.C., where he stayed until 1896. In July of that year he joined Hearts, answering an advertisement from the then reigning Scottish Cup holders. He appeared infrequently as Hearts won the 1896-97 League title but became a more regular player the following season. He played in Hearts 1900-01 Scottish Cup win, where the Edinburgh side defeated Celtic 4-3 in the final and was club captain by the time the side reached the 1902-03 final, where they lost to Rangers. Buick's appearance led many commentators to consider him an unlikely defender. He measured only 5 foot 7 inches tall, had a slight stoop and his long, gangly arms earned him the nickname "spider". George Key
George Brown Key (11 February 1882 – November 1958) was a Scottish international footballer who played in both the Scottish and English football leagues. Career Key was born in the Dennistoun district of Glasgow, and played at Junior level for Parkhead before stepping up to Heart of Midlothian in 1899. With Hearts, Key won the Scottish Cup in 1901 and the following season, was capped for Scotland against Ireland, also appearing in the away leg of the 'World Championship' against Tottenham Hotspur. He was a Scottish Cup runner-up in 1903. After a disagreement with Hearts over financial matters, Key was signed by Chelsea in 1905 for their first season in English football. The West London club's manager Jacky Robertson had been an international teammate of Key's three years earlier. Key was only a regular in his first year at Chelsea, and left in 1909. Jack Kirwan
John Henry Kirwan (9 February 1878 – 9 January 1959) was an Irish football player and coach. As a player, he was described as an out and out winger with good pace and skills, playing as an outside-left for, among others, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Ireland. He had previously played Gaelic football for Dublin. As a football coach he became the first professional manager of Dutch side Ajax. He was the last survivor of the Tottenham team that won the 1901 FA Cup. Playing career Early years Kirwan initially played Gaelic football for the Dublin county team and won an All-Ireland medal with Dublin in 1894 when they defeated Cork by 1–2 to 0–5 after a replay. David Copeland (2 April 1875 – 1931) was a professional footballer who played for Ayr Parkhouse, Walsall Town Swifts, Bedminster, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Glossop North End. Football career Copeland a forward played for his local team Ayr Parkhouse before joining Walsall Town Swifts in 1893 where he featured in 76 matches, scoring on 19 occasions. After playing for Bedminster in 1898–99, Copeland joined Tottenham Hotspur where he was a member of the 1901 FA Cup winning side. He moved on to Chelsea in 1905 and featured in 26 matches and finding the net nine times. Copeland ended his career at Glossop North End where he made a further two appearances. Sandy Brown (Scottish Footballer Born 1879)
Alexander White Brown (21 December 1877 – 6 March 1944) was a Scottish footballer. Career Brown was a prolific scorer in Scottish youth football, and earned his nickname as the "Glenbuck Goalgetter" as a 16-year-old playing for Glenbuck Athletic. Turning professional with St Bernard's two years later, he was soon induced across the border to English football with Preston North End. After three years, his career continued with Portsmouth, then Tottenham Hotspur. During the 1900–01 season, Brown scored 15 goals during Tottenham's FA Cup run, including a goal in every round, which resulted in the club becoming the only non-League team to win the Cup. Brown scored both of Tottenham's goals in the first Final against Sheffield United, a 2–2 draw; in the replayed match he scored another as Spurs beat United 3–1 to win the Cup. John Cameron (1872-1935)
John Cameron (13 April 1872 – 20 April 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. He played as a forward for Queen's Park, Everton and Scotland and was noted as an effective goal-maker and goalscorer. In 1899 he became player-manager at Tottenham Hotspur and guided them to victory in the 1901 FA Cup. As a result, they became the only club outside the English Football League to win the competition. In 1898 he became the first secretary of the Association Footballers' Union, which was the ill-fated fore-runner of the Professional Footballers' Association. He later coached Dresdner SC and during the First World War he was interned at Ruhleben, a civilian detention camp in Germany. Tom Smith (footballer Born 1876)
Tom Smith (26 November 1876 – 1937) was a professional footballer who played for Preston North End, Tottenham Hotspur and Carlisle United. Football career Smith began his career at Preston North End in 1895 where he played 53 matches and scored on eight occasions up till 1897. Whilst at Preston, Smith played alongside his namesake, who subsequently joined Southampton. The outside right went on to join Tottenham Hotspur. He was part of the squad that won the Southern League in 1899–1900 season, and featured in both matches in the 1901 FA Cup Final and scored the second Lilywhite's goal in their cup winning replay.
