1901 VFL Season
The 1901 VFL season was the fifth season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 4 May until 7 September, and comprised a 17-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by 27 points in the 1901 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1901, the VFL competition consisted of eight teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match. Each team played each other twice in a home-and-away season of 14 rounds. Fred Hiskins
John Frederick Hiskins (8 August 1878 – 25 November 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. Hiskins came from a family of 16 and hailed from Lake Moodermere near Wahgunyah, Victoria. Hiskins played in Excelsior's 1900 Ovens & Murray Football League premiership prior to making his VFL debut in round 15, 1900 against South Melbourne. Hiskins was a half forward and topped the league's goalkicking in the 1901 VFL season with 34 goals, finishing the year in Essendon's premiership side. He would have kicked more that year had it not been for an inaccurate game against South Melbourne which saw him kick two goals and ten behinds. Hiskins regularly used the place kick to shoot at goal and represented Victoria against South Australia in Adelaide in 1902. Sydney Swans
The Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Swans also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The club's origins trace back to 21 March 1873, when a meeting was held at the Clarendon Hotel in South Melbourne to establishing a junior football club, to be called the South Melbourne Football Club. The club commenced playing in 1874 at its home ground; Lakeside Oval in Albert Park. Teddy Rankin
Edwin Walter "Teddy" Rankin (11 March 1872 – 31 July 1944) was an Australian rules footballer, originally with Riversdale, who began playing with Geelong in the VFA in 1891, and later played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Walter Rankin (1849–1930), and Sarah Rankin, née Austin, Edwin Walter Rankin was born in Geelong, Victoria on 11 March 1872. Brothers Two of his brothers played for Geelong Football Club: Tom Rankin (1881–1958), 47 games (1904–1906), and Samuel John Rankin (1872–1958) (who was never selected in the VFL team's First XVIII). Lardie Tulloch
Lawrence Gideon "Lardie" Tulloch (15 April 1871 – 13 September 1955) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the early years of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Tulloch was born in Melbourne, the son of Daniel Tulloch and Elizabeth Trethway. Tulloch was a member of the Collingwood side which played in the inaugural VFL season, in 1897. A versatile player who was used at all ends of the ground, Tulloch was appointed Collingwood captain in 1902 and led Collingwood to the premiership that season, putting his name into history as the club's first ever VFL premiership winning captain. Another premiership followed the subsequent season and he remained captain for 1904, which was his final league season. Ted Rowell (footballer)
Edward Michael Rowell (15 June 1876 – 21 July 1965) was a professional athlete, and an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of William Rowell (1836-1903), and Johanna Rowell (1833-1900), née Ahern, Edward Michael Rowell was born in the Victorian goldfields, at Vaughan, on 15 June 1876. He married Rachel Johnston (1891-1970), at Footscray, Victoria on 4 March 1908. Early life As a teenager in the 1890s Rowell was attracted to the goldfields in Western Australia and as a youngster was proficient in cricket, foot running and Australian rules football. Archie Smith (footballer, Born 1872)
Arthur Robert Smith (16 February 1872 – 20 July 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the years leading up to and following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Playing career Smith, who was recruited from Richmond Football Club, was Collingwood's main target up forward during his career. Smith made his VFL debut in Collingwood's inaugural VFL game, against St Kilda Football Club in round one, 1897, and went on to top their goal-kicking in each of his first four seasons. Smith's tally of 31 goals in 1898 was enough to win the VFL Leading Goalkicker Medal. Although he wasn't the most prolific forward for Collingwood in 1901, his 30 goals helped his club reach the 1901 VFL Grand Final, where they lost to Essendon.
