Dave Berry (American Football)
David J. Berry (May 1870 – November 10, 1928) was an American football manager during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the top promoter for the sport during that time period. He is credited with inventing the "all-star game concept" in 1898, and also helped to form one of the first organized football leagues in 1902. Latrobe He was the manager of the Latrobe Athletic Association the first ever fully professional football team to play an entire season. He was also signed John Brallier to the Latrobe football team in 1895, for $10 a game plus expenses, making him the first-ever openly professional football player. Outside of pro football, Berry was the editor of the ''Latrobe Clipper'' newspaper. All-Star game Berry was also the inventor of the all-star game. Harry Ryan (American Football)
Harry J. "Cap" Ryan (died 1953) was an early professional football player for the Latrobe Athletic Association from 1895 until 1906. He was also selected to be the first captain in that team's history. He played alongside John Brallier who is considered the first openly professional football player. In 1897 he was named to the "All Western Pennsylvania Team" by ''The Pittsburg Times''. In 1898, he was selected by Latrobe manager David Berry to play for the Western Pennsylvania All-Stars in the very first football all-star game, against the Duquesne Country and Athletic Club. Ryan also served as advisor to Berry until 1902 when he went to Philadelphia to start the first National Football League. The Latrobe Athletic Association was a professional football team located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, from 1895 until 1909. A member of the unofficial Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit, the team is best known for being the first football club to play a full season while composed entirely of professional players. In 1895, team's quarterback, John Brallier, also became the first football player to openly turn professional, by accepting $10 and expenses to play for Latrobe against the Jeannette Athletic Club. Origins In 1895 the local Latrobe YMCA organized a local football team and announced that the team play a formal schedule. With the decision, Russell Aukerman, an instructor at the club and a former halfback at Gettysburg College, was named as a player-coach. The 1900 Duquesne Country and Athletic Club football season was the sixth and final season of play for the professional American football team representing the Duquesne Country and Athletic Club (DC&AC). Managed by third-year captain and coach Roy Jackson, the team compiled a 9–2 record and outscored its opponents by an aggregate 183–23. Season summary The team was unable to keep its roster intact from its dominant previous season as several players, including star backs J. A. Gammons and Dave Fultz, were lured by higher salaries to the Homestead Library & Athletic Club. Nevertheless, the DC&AC found sufficient replacements to remain strong. The DC&AC and other athletic clubs in the Pittsburgh area were plagued throughout the season by bad weather, which suppressed attendance and caused financial losses. 1900 Homestead Library & Athletic Club Football Team
The 1900 Homestead Library & Athletic Club football team won the professional football championship of 1900. The team was affiliated with the Homestead Library & Athletic Club in Homestead, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. The team featured a lineup of former college All-Americans paid by Pittsburgh Pirates' minority-owner William Chase Temple. Organization In 1898, William Chase Temple took over the Duquesne Country and Athletic Club, becoming the first individual team owner in professional football. In 1900, most of the Duquesne players were hired by the Homestead Library & Athletic Club, by offering them higher salaries. Over the next two season (1900 and 1901), Homestead fielded the best professional football team in the country and did not lose a game.
