1899 Sheriff Of London Charity Shield
The 1899 Sheriff of London Charity Shield was the second edition of the Sheriff of London Charity Shield. The match between Queen's Park and league champions Aston Villa was a goalless draw, even following thirty minutes of added time. No replay was agreed between the sides so the honour was shared. Match Background Aston Villa were the 1898–99 Football League champions for the fourth time in their history and Queen's Park of Glasgow were selected by the trophy committee as the best amateur side of the year, having defeated Corinthian twice that year (2–3 away and 4–1 at home). This was to be the only time that an amateur side other than Corinthian would contest the trophy, as well as the only game featuring a non-English side. Sheriff Of London Charity Shield
The Sheriff of London Charity Shield, also known as the Dewar Shield, was a football competition played annually between the best amateur and best professional club in England, though Scottish amateur side Queens Park also took part in 1899. The professional side was either the Football League champion or FA Cup winner from the previous season while the amateurs were usually represented by Corinthians, a renowned amateur side of the time. The first game was played on 19 March 1898, after being devised by Sir Thomas Dewar and ratified by the Football Association, whose president Lord Kinnaird and former president Sir Francis Marindin sat on the Shield's committee. Proceeds from the annual game were distributed to hospitals and charities. Tommy Bowman
Thomas Bowman (26 October 1873 – 27 August 1958) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a half back in the 1902 FA Cup final for Southampton. Playing career Bowman began his professional career at Blackpool in 1896, making his debut in the club's first-ever game in the Football League, a 3–1 defeat at Lincoln City on 5 September. His thirty league appearances in 1896–97 made him an ever-present in the team. He joined Aston Villa the following season where he gained a reputation as a strong, determined centre-half. George Frederick Wheldon (1 November 1869 – 13 January 1924) was an English sportsman. He was sometimes known as Fred or Freddie Wheldon. In football, he was an inside-forward with good footwork and an eye for goal who played for England and several Football League clubs, in particular for Small Heath and Aston Villa. Billy Garraty
William Garraty (6 October 1878 – 6 May 1931) was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England, who played for Aston Villa from August 1897 to September 1908. Before playing for Villa he played for Aston Shakespeare. Garraty was capped once by England appearing in a game against Wales in 1903. Career Billy Garraty made his league debut for Aston Villa during the 1897–98 season but made just one other appearance that year and remained a bit part player as Aston Villa won the title the following year.
