1898 VFL Finals Series
The Victorian Football League's 1898 finals series determined the premiers of the 1898 VFL season. Played under a new playoff system, the finals featured all eight teams, beginning on 27 August and concluding with the 1898 VFL Grand Final on 24 September. The premiership was won by , who defeated by 15 points in the Grand Final. Finals system The VFL introduced a new system of finals for the 1898 season. Victorian Football League (1897–1989)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). The WT Peterson Community Oval, best known as the Brunswick Street Oval and also as the Fitzroy Cricket Ground, is a cricket and Australian rules football ground located in Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy North, Victoria. Charlie Pannam (footballer, Born 1874)
Charles Henry Pannam (2 October 1874 – 29 October 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) between 1894 and 1896 then in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1897 and 1906. He then played for the Richmond Football Club in the VFA in 1907 then in the VFL in 1908. He was senior coach of Richmond in 1907 and 1912. Family The son of a Greek immigrant father, Ioannis ("John") Pannam (1832–1899) and an Australian mother, Anne Pannam (1841–1898), née Hughes, Charles Henry Pannam was born at Daylesford on 2 October 1874. His father's family name of Pannamopoulos had been shortened to Pannam when he emigrated from Greece to Australia in 1856. His father, John, had originally arrived in Newcastle, NSW in 1855, however, he was charged as a deserter and sent back to Greece, only to return and settle the following year. Fred Leach
John Frederick Leach (6 March 1878 – 14 April 1908) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Leach (1847-1916), and Emma Bunkin Leach (1847-1893), née Stuckey, John Frederick Leach was born in Heidelberg, Victoria on 6 March 1878. Jack Dalton (footballer)
John George Dalton (15 April 1876 – 12 March 1923) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Making his senior debut in 1896, the year before the inaugural VFL season, Dalton was a half back flanker in Fitzroy's 1898 premiership team. Bert Sharpe

Kelly Robinson
James Peter "Kelly" Robinson (1876 – 26 November 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of George Robinson, and Mary Robinson, née Higgins, James Peter Robinson was born at Tooborac, Victoria in 1876. He married Teresa Florence Skinner (1881-1956) in 1907. Football Robinson was recruited to Fitzroy from the Collingwood Imperials. He was a wingman in Fitzroy's 1898 and 1899 premierships and also played in their losing 1900 Grand Final team. At one stage in his career he played in 19 consecutive wins. Robinson kicked just one goal in his career, against Collingwood, in the opening game of the 1900 season. Death He died at the Austin Hospital, in Heidelberg, Melbourne on 26 November 1943. Paddy Noonan
Patrick Thomas "Paddy" Noonan (4 September 1875 – 27 January 1935) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club and Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League. Football A small rover, Noonan played in Fitzroy's inaugural VFL season in 1897 and then their inaugural premiership side the following year. In 1901 he crossed to Carlton and spent two seasons with the Blues. Noonan spent the rest of his career in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) where he captained North Melbourne to premierships in 1903 and 1904. Noonan also spent some time playing at fellow VFA side Williamstown Football Club. Following North Melbourne's entry to the VFL, Noonan was appointed coach in 1929, where North Melbourne finished last, with their only win coming against Footscray. Bill McSpeerin
William Joseph McSpeerin (25 September 1874 – 3 June 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of James McSpeerin (1846-1909), and Catherine McSpeerin (1842-1890), née Reid, William Joseph McSpeerin was born at Carlton, Victoria on 25 September 1874. He married Mary Anna "Marie" Rau (1876-1961) in 1906. Football A rover, McSpeerin debuted with Fitzroy when the club was still in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and was a member of their 1895 premiership side. When the Victorian Football League was formed in 1897, McSpeerin was a key member of the team and appeared in 10 out of 14 games that season, including one match against St Kilda where he reportedly ran the entire length of the oval to kick a goal. Patrick Joseph "Pat" Descrimes (31 December 1877 – 6 January 1939) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Mick Grace
Michael John Grace (24 July 187421 May 1912) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club, Carlton Football Club and St Kilda Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Grace, and Julia Grace, née O'Callaghan, Michael John Grace was born in Burnley, Victoria on 24 July 1874. He was the brother of Fitzroy footballers Jim Grace and Joe Grace. He married Martha Drew in 1903. Football Mick Grace was a follower/forward who started his career at the top level in the VFA in 1895 with Fitzroy, joining his older brother Jim. Grace was part of Fitzroy's premiership team in that season (although no Grand Final was played in the VFA at the time).
