1898 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1898 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the eleventh All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1898 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Dublin, who led 1-6 to 0-3 at the interval, were the winners, with Joe Ledwidge scoring both goals. The captain of the winning team was Matt Rea. At this time, club teams represented their counties with the Geraldines club representing Dublin and Waterford represented by the Erin's Hope club of Dungarvan. It was the fifth of six All-Ireland football titles won by Dublin in the 1890s. Tipperary (town)
Tipperary Town (; ) is a town and a civil parish in County Tipperary, Ireland. Its population was 4,979 at the 2016 census. It is also an ecclesiastical parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, and is in the historical barony of Clanwilliam. The town gave its name to County Tipperary. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Joseph Ledwidge
Joseph James Ledwidge Sr. (8th June 1877 – 19th January 1953) was a Gaelic footballer, an Irish international soccer player and a cricketer. He won two All-Ireland medals playing with the Dublin Geraldines and later played with Shelbourne in the Irish League.Obituary, Evening Press, 20 January 1953 Early life Ledwidge was born on Arran Quay, Dublin, Ireland to Joseph William Ledwidge, a butcher, and Elizabeth Trulock. He married Molly Owens in 1910. Sporting career He had his first successes playing with the Geraldines' selection that won two All-Ireland titles for Dublin in 1898 and 1899. Ledwidge joined Shelbourne in 1901 when they played in the Leinster Senior League and played 51 times for them in the Irish League after they joined in 1904 until he left Shelbourne in 1909. Matt Rea (Gaelic Footballer)
Matthew Rea (10 April 1873 – 10 November 1942) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. His championship career at senior level with the Dublin county team lasted two seasons from 1898 until 1899. Born in Glenroe, County Limerick, Rea was born to David and Mary Rea (née Keating). He was educated locally before moving to Dublin where he worked as a civil servant. After moving to Dublin, Rea helped establish the Geraldines club in 1896. As well as being a founder-member he also became a regular member of the senior team and won back-to-back county football championship medals in 1898 and 1899. Rea made his debut on the inter-county scene as a member of the Dublin senior football team during the 1898 championship. As captain of the team he won back-to-back All-Ireland medals in 1898 and 1899. Rea also won two Leinster medals. Rea died from mouth cancer at the age of 69 on 10 November 1942. Geraldines Patrick Moran (Irish language, Irish: ''Gearaltaigh Uí Mhóráin'' ) are a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club based in Cornelscourt, Dublin. They are one of the oldest clubs in Dublin. Their ground is beside Cornelscourt shopping centre. The club is an amalgamation of 2 clubs- Foxrock Geraldines and Patrick Morans. Dungarvan
Dungarvan () is a coastal town and harbour in County Waterford, on the south-east coast of Ireland. Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan was the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford.
