The 1897 Argentine Primera División was the 6th season of top-flight football in Argentina. The championship was won by Lomas that achieved its 4th Argentine league title in 5 seasons. Lomas won the title after beating Lanús A.C. by 1-0 in a 3rd playoff match. The players of Lomas Academy (dissolved one year before) returned to its parent club, Lomas Athletic, while Lanús A.C., Banfield and Palermo A.C. made their debuts and Belgrano A.C. registered a "B" team to play the tournament. Belgrano Athletic Club
Belgrano Athletic Club is an Argentine amateur sports club from Belgrano, Buenos Aires. One of Argentina's oldest institutions still in existence, Belgrano was one of the four clubs that founded the Argentine Rugby Union in 1899. The senior team currently competes at Top 12, the first division of the Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires league system. Belgrano Athletic was one of the most prominent teams during the first years of football in Argentina, having won three domestic league titles, one national cup and two international cups. Belgrano's arch-rival during those years was Alumni, also from Belgrano neighborhood. Belgrano disaffiliated from the Argentine Association in late 1910s, focusing on rugby union and other sports. William Leslie was a Scottish footballer who played as Defender for Lomas Athletic Club and the Argentina national team. Career Leslie began his career in Lomas Athletic Club, team where he had won the first division championship 1893, and it had been the top scorer with 7 goals. Between 1900 and 1904 Leslie played in Quilmes Atlético Club. In 1902 Leslie played in the Argentine team, who had played his first match against the Uruguay team. Lomas de Zamora is a city in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, located south of the City of Buenos Aires and within the metropolitan area of Greater Buenos Aires. Lomas (Spanish for "hills"), also called fog oases and mist oases, are areas of fog-watered vegetation in the coastal desert of Peru and northern Chile. About 100 lomas near the Pacific Ocean are identified between 5°S and 30°S latitude, a north–south distance of about . Lomas range in size from a small vegetated area to more than and their flora includes many endemic species. Apart from river valleys and the lomas the coastal desert is almost without vegetation.
