1896 Birthday Honours
The 1896 Birthday Honours were appointments by Queen Victoria to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of The Queen, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' on 20 May and 26 May and in ''The Times'' on 20 May 1896. Queen Victoria
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until Death and state funeral of Queen Victoria, her death in 1901. Knight Bachelor
The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I of Great Britain, George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved Bathing#Medieval and early-modern Europe, bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Order (honour), Military Order". Sir William John Anderson (1847 – 27 August 1908) was a British barrister and colonial judge. Sir Henry Spencer Hardtman Berkeley (6 September 1851 – 30 September 1918 ), was a barrister, Attorney General and Chief Justice of Fiji and Attorney-General of Hong Kong. Early life Berkeley was the third son of Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley and Alice Hart Rawlins, of St. Kitts. He was educated for the legal profession and called to the bar at the Inner Temple in June 1873. In 1878, Berkeley married Katherine Cassin, daughter of F. S. Cassin of Antigua in the West Indies. William Henry Cox
Sir William Henry Lionel Cox (c. 1844 – November 1921) was a British lawyer and judge. He served as Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early life Cox was born in about 1844 in Mauritius, the son of physician George B. Cox, and was educated at the Royal College, Mauritius and the University of London. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1866. Legal appointments In 1880, Cox was appointed Substitute Procureur and Advocate General of Mauritius, and in August of that year Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court. Sir William Ralph Meredith, (March 31, 1840 – August 21, 1923) was a Canadian lawyer, politician and judge. He served as Leader of the Ontario Conservatives from 1878 to 1894, Chancellor of the University of Toronto from 1900 until his death, and Chief Justice of Ontario from 1913 until his death. Sir Peter le Page Renouf (23 August 1822 – 14 October 1897) was a British professor, Egyptologist, and museum director, best known for his translation of ''The Book of the Dead''.
